The emergence of cities is a very important milestone in human history. Before that, people lived in small nomadic groups that moved in search of food. With the discovery of agriculture, these groups began to settle down and form the first permanent communities. These communities grew and became more complex until they transformed into the first cities.
Cities bring many changes to people's lives. One of them is the transformation of the landscape. Agricultural activities, which were once the main source of subsistence, now coexist with urban activities. Over time, the process of industrialization further alters this scenario, with the construction of factories, the expansion of transportation networks, and the intensification of commerce.
Relevance of the Theme
Understanding the emergence of cities is fundamental to comprehend the social changes that have occurred over time and that shape our lives today. Cities are also the stage for many current challenges, such as environmental issues, social inequality, and the management of natural resources.
Furthermore, cities are the expression of different cultures, as in them we can observe the presence of various architectural styles, forms of social organization, and economic systems. Thus, studying the emergence of cities opens up the possibility of better understanding human diversity and the multiple ways of interacting with nature.
Practical Activity - 'Creation of a City'
Project Objective
This project aims to lead students to understand in a practical way the processes and factors that influence the emergence and development of cities.
Project Description
Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, must build a three-dimensional map of a city. The city should include aspects related to agriculture, industry, commerce, housing, transportation, among others. It is important to remember that all these elements must be contextualized within the scenario of the emergence and development of a city. To do this, students will have to research and apply concepts about the emergence of cities in the configuration of their map.
Necessary Materials
- Cardboard or cardstock for the base of the map
- Colorful paper of various types for constructing the elements of the map
- Acrylic paint, markers, or colored pencils
- Glue
- Scissors

In the introduction, the group must contextualize the theme and present a brief description of the city created. In the development, the group must describe the process of creating the city, explaining their decisions, the theories applied, and the methodology used. In the conclusion, the group must discuss the results obtained and the lessons learned. Finally, in the bibliography, the group must list the sources consulted during the project development.
