From a geographical point of view, vegetation formations are fascinating because they are the products of the interaction of many natural systems. They are both a response to the geography of a location (climate, soil, topography) and an agent of geographical change in themselves.
Importance of Vegetation Formations
Understanding vegetation formations is crucial for our daily lives and for environmental preservation. They play a fundamental role in many of Earth's natural processes, such as the carbon cycle and the water cycle. In addition, vegetation formations provide a variety of economic resources, from wood and rubber to medicinal plants.
The diversity of these formations reflects not only the diversity of plant life but also the complex interaction between living organisms and the environment. Understanding these relationships is a crucial step in preserving the various plant species and, consequently, animal life.
Practical Activity: 'Explorers of Vegetation Formations'
Project Objective
The goal of this project is to create a 'Vegetation Formations Guide.' Each group will be responsible for researching, understanding, and representing a specific vegetation formation (such as tropical forests, savannas, taigas, deserts, etc.). The guide should contain detailed information about the climate, soil, and relief of the region and how these factors influence the vegetation formation. Additionally, the formation should be illustrated with drawings or collages.
Detailed Project Description
The project will be divided into three main parts:
- Research: Students will research different types of vegetation formations, the climatic patterns that influence them, the types of soil, and the predominant relief in the region.
- Graphic Representation: After the research, each group will represent the vegetation formation on a poster, including drawings and information about the type of vegetation, climate, soil, and relief.
- Presentation: Finally, each group will present their work to the class, highlighting the most important and interesting points of their research.
Required Materials
- Books and internet access for research.
- Cardboard or poster board for the posters.
- Colored pencils, markers, glue, scissors, magazines for collages (optional), etc...

Step by Step
- Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
- Assign a different vegetation formation to each group.
- Each group should research the assigned vegetation formation, identifying the climate, soil, and relief factors that influence its formation.
- Students should create a poster about the researched vegetation formation. The poster should include representative drawings and information about the factors that influence its formation.
- Groups present their posters, explaining what they have learned about the vegetation formation they researched.
- The activity should be concluded with the production of a report.
Project Deliverables
- Poster: The poster should be presented to the class and digitally or physically submitted for the teacher's evaluation.
- Presentation: The presentation can be recorded or done live, depending on the possibilities of each institution.
- Report: The report should be written and organized following the proposed structure: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.
In the report, the Introduction should contextualize the studied vegetation formation, the relevance of the study, and the objectives of this project. In the Development, the group should explain the theory about the vegetation formation, detail the activities carried out, the methodology used in research and presentation, and discuss the results obtained. In the Conclusions, important learnings and unique observations should be highlighted. Finally, in the Bibliography, all research sources should be correctly cited.
As students are working in groups, the evaluation of the report should consider both the quality of the content and collaboration and teamwork.
