Commerce and Service

Context

Commerce and the Services Sector are fundamental parts of any country's economy. Commerce involves the buying and selling of goods, from agricultural products, clothing to electronics, while the services sector encompasses a variety of activities, including education, health, transportation, tourism, among others. Together, these two sectors drive a significant portion of the global economy and are essential to understanding how the circulation of goods and services functions in our society.

In the Brazilian case, commerce and the services sector represent a significant portion of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), that is, the total wealth produced in the country. Therefore, understanding how they operate, besides being an essential part of our Geography curriculum, is also a way to better understand the world we live in and the structures that sustain it.

Project Introduction

In this project, we will delve into the universe of Commerce and Services, seeking to understand their importance and functionality in the Brazilian economy. The idea is that through this activity, you can not only acquire knowledge about these sectors but also develop important skills, such as teamwork, time management, and critical thinking.

The goal is that, by the end of this project, you will be able to explain the changes in human interaction with nature from the emergence of cities, as well as present the importance of the commerce and services sectors within the Brazilian economy. With this, we hope that you can better understand the world you live in and become more conscious and critical citizens.

To start, we suggest that you look for support materials to familiarize yourself with the topic. Some good resources include the book 'Geography: concepts and themes' by Paulo Roberto Moraes (available in the school library), the website of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), and the news from the G1 Economy website.

Feel free to search for other resources that you find useful and interesting for the project's development. Always remember to take note of the source of the information used, as they should be cited in the Bibliography of the final report.

Practical Activity: 'The Commerce and Services of Our City'

Project Objective

Understand the importance and functionality of the commerce and services sectors in the local economy, highlighting their relationship with urban structuring and human interaction with the environment.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will investigate and map the distribution of commercial establishments and services in a region of the city determined by the teacher. They should contact (in person or by phone) some of these establishments to obtain information about the range of products/services offered, the origin of these products/services, the number of employees, etc.

Based on this information, the students must create an illustrative map of the investigated region, highlighting the distribution of establishments and the collected information. In addition, the group must produce a written report explaining how the commerce and services sectors impact the local economy and the spatial formation of the city.

Required Materials

  • Pencils, pens, eraser
  • Paper for drawing the map (cardboard, kraft paper, or even A4 paper, as available)
  • Internet access for research
  • Phone for contacting establishments

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Select a region of the city for the research.
  3. Research on the internet or visit the region to identify existing commercial and service establishments.
  4. Contact some establishments to obtain information.
  5. Record the information obtained.
  6. Create an illustrative map of the region with the distribution of establishments and the collected information.
  7. Write an explanatory report on the importance of commerce and services in the local economy and the spatial formation of the city.

Project Submission

The group must submit the illustrative map and the written report. The report should be divided into the following sections:

  1. Introduction: Briefly describe the project's objective, the relevance of the topic, and the methodology used.
  2. Development: Explain the information collected about the commercial and service establishments, detail the map creation process, and discuss how these sectors impact the local economy and the spatial formation of the city.
  3. Conclusion: Conclude the work by summarizing its main points, stating the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn from the project.
  4. Bibliography: Cite the sources used in the research.

The evaluation will be based on the quality and accuracy of the information collected, the clarity and creativity of the map, the structure and content of the report, and the collaboration among group members throughout the process.
