In History, the concept of Historical Time is one of the main pillars. Through it, we can organize and understand past events, seeing their connections to our present and thinking about future possibilities. Historical Time is not linear, as many may think, but is full of comings and goings, advances and setbacks, continuities and ruptures.

Thus, we divide History into eras, periods, and moments, each marked by its particularities and important events. However, these divisions are not rigid or absolute: they are human creations designed to help us understand and interpret the past.

In this project, we will explore the notion of Historical Time, investigating its role in how we understand our past and how it affects the way we face the present and plan for the future. This is a crucial subject that concerns all of our lives, as we are all actors in History, contributing to the increasingly complex tapestry of human development.

Understanding Historical Time is essential not only to understand our past, but also so that we can make more informed decisions in the present and future. By understanding that time is not homogeneous, but punctuated by moments of rupture and continuity, we can begin to question and explore how History is told and interpreted.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Timeline on Display

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to develop a deep understanding of the concept of Historical Time, exercising their ability to trace and understand timelines and perceive the ruptures and continuities in a given historical period.

Project Description

In this project, groups of students (3 to 5 members) will create an illustrated poster representing the timeline of a specific historical period. This poster should include the most significant events of the chosen period, as well as its main ruptures and continuities.

Required Materials

• Cardboard or similar material for the base of the poster
• Colored pens, colored pencils, crayons, etc.
• Glue and scissors
• Printed or hand-drawn images to illustrate the events (optional)
• A4 paper for the report composition.

Activity Step-by-Step

1. Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group will choose a historical period to be represented on the poster, for example, the Middle Ages or the Industrial Revolution.
2. Research the chosen historical period, identifying the most relevant events and the main ruptures and continuities that marked that era.
3. Using the cardboard and drawing and painting materials, draw a timeline and represent the chosen events along it, indicating their relative position in time and their importance for the period in question.
4. Alongside each event, write a brief description, highlighting its importance and how it represented a rupture or continuity in History.
5. Finish the poster with a title that represents the historical period and the group's view on Historical Time.

This project should take approximately two to four hours per student to complete, with the time distribution according to the group's planning. The deadline for submission is one week.

At the end of this project, each group must deliver:

1. The illustrated and descriptive poster about the chosen historical period.
2. A written report on the project.

It should contain a contextualization of the project, the relevance of studying the Historical Time theme, and a summary of the project's objectives.

Students should explain the theory behind the notion of Historical Time, how they used it to choose and represent the events on their poster, and how they worked as a team. They should also present and discuss the results obtained, that is, the discoveries and conclusions they reached by studying the historical period and creating the poster.

Conclusion

Students should gather the main points worked on, exposing what they learned from the project, reviewing the objectives and results obtained. In this topic, it is important to highlight the skills developed during the project execution, such as collaboration, time management, critical thinking, among others.

Finally, students should list all sources used for the research and study of the chosen historical period, such as books, articles, websites, videos, etc., following the appropriate format for bibliographic citations.
