Concepts of Algorithms

An algorithm is a set of defined and unambiguous instructions or rules, ordered and finite, aimed at solving a problem, performing a computation, or executing a task. In our daily lives, we use algorithms to perform various activities, such as cooking a recipe, playing a game, and even for mathematical calculations.

In the educational field, teaching algorithms contributes to the development of logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Mathematics, for example, is full of algorithms that help us perform calculations, understand concepts, and solve problems.

In an increasingly digital world, understanding the concept of an algorithm is fundamental. Information and communication technology, when creating computer programs, also use algorithms to perform calculations and tasks.

Importance of Algorithms in the Real World

In the real world, algorithms are everywhere. From the basic functions of a cell phone to Netflix's artificial intelligence that recommends movies based on algorithms. Moreover, the ability to create algorithms is a sought-after skill in many fields of work, especially in careers related to Information Technology.

Furthermore, algorithmic thinking, that is, the ability to solve problems through the creation of algorithms, is an essential skill for the 21st century. It promotes the development of critical thinking, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills, which are transversal to all disciplines and areas of knowledge.

Atividade Prática

Activity Title: "Creating and Solving a Treasure Hunt with Algorithms"

Project Objective:

Students will learn the theoretical concepts of algorithms, their steps, representation with flowcharts, and practical application. They will use these acquired skills to create and solve playful activities, such as a Treasure Hunt, using algorithms.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5. Each group will be responsible for creating a Treasure Hunt, with at least five stages, where each stage will consist of a riddle to be solved that will lead to the next stage. Each riddle will be formulated and solved through algorithms.

Students will also be responsible for creating a flowchart that represents the algorithm to solve each riddle. This will teach students how to visualize the solution to a problem in a structured and logical way.

Necessary Materials:

  • Paper and pencil to write and draw the algorithms,
  • Flipcharts or cardboards for creating the flowcharts,
  • Various materials (that students can find at school or at home) for the elaboration of the treasure hunt.

Detailed Step-by-Step:

Part 1: Understanding Algorithms and Flowcharts

  1. Students, in their groups, should research and discuss the concept of algorithms and flowcharts, using the provided resources and others they may find relevant.
  2. Each group should present their understanding of the concepts to the class, so that everyone can learn from different perspectives.

Part 2: Creating the Treasure Hunt

  1. Each group, now with an understanding of the concepts, should create a Treasure Hunt with 5 stages.
  2. Each stage should be a riddle that, when solved, leads to the next stage. The solutions to the riddles should be achievable through an algorithm.
  3. Each group should also create a flowchart that represents the algorithm to solve each riddle.

Part 3: Solving the Treasure Hunt

  1. Each group should present their Treasure Hunt, along with the flowcharts, to the other groups.
  2. The groups should then try to solve the Treasure Hunt of the other groups, using the flowcharts to help solve the riddles.

Project Deliverables:

Students must deliver:

1. Written Document:

It should present the Introduction (contextualization and objective), Development (detailed description of the activity and algorithms used), Conclusions (what learnings were obtained, what difficulties were encountered, and how they were overcome), and Bibliography used.

2. Presentation of the Treasure Hunt:

Includes the created riddles, the algorithms to solve the riddles, and the corresponding flowcharts.

Students will deliver the document and make the presentation of the Treasure Hunt to the other groups and to the teacher, so that everyone can appreciate the work done.
