Theoretical Introduction

Flowcharts are of great utility when we want to visualize processes in a structured and logical way, regardless of the field of study considered. In the world of programming, for example, flowcharts allow programmers to represent algorithms graphically, facilitating the understanding and development of software. In business management, flowcharts can help visualize the productive or administrative flow, highlighting bottlenecks or redundant steps that can be optimized to increase efficiency.

A flowchart is composed of a series of symbols, each with a specific meaning, connected by lines that represent the flows or movements between the stages of the process. For example, we can use a rectangle to represent a task to be performed, a diamond for a decision to be made, and so on. Each process starts at a specific point (start) and ends at another (end), and may contain one or more intermediate paths, depending on the decisions made throughout the process.

Flowcharts can vary in complexity, from simple mind maps used to organize ideas, to complex workflow diagrams used to model and optimize industrial processes. In Mathematics, flowcharts can be used to represent mathematical algorithms and logical problems.

Importance and Real-world Application

In the real world, flowcharts have applications in various areas. As mentioned earlier, they are used in programming to design and document the flow of a software. In administration, they are useful for process modeling and optimization, or even for training new employees, clearly showing them the workflow.

Furthermore, flowcharts prove to be valuable in the school environment, being used to improve the teaching-learning process. For example, if a student is having difficulty understanding a process or a concept, a flowchart can help in understanding, as it visually draws the logical sequence of events or ideas.

In summary, the use of flowcharts is extremely relevant, both in the workplace and at school, in academic life, and even in personal life, helping each of us to better organize our thoughts and actions.

Activity

Activity Title: "Creating and solving everyday problems with flowcharts"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to provide students with the practical experience of creating and using flowcharts, applying them to solve problems and situations in everyday life. In addition, the project aims to foster students' teamwork skills, time management, communication, and creative thinking.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3-5 members for the development of this project. Each group will need to create and illustrate a real-life story or scenario that has multiple possibilities and outcomes based on choices or decisions that the characters in the story need to make. For example, they can create a story of a character who needs to decide between various extracurricular activities, or a character who needs to make a decision on how to spend their money.

Subsequently, they will need to create a flowchart to clearly represent the situation and the possible resolutions of the problem, including all decisions, outcomes, and possible results.

The project will be carried out over a period of approximately two weeks, with at least 12 hours of dedication from each student.

Required Materials

  1. Paper, pens of different colors, pencils, and eraser.
  2. Free digital tools for creating flowcharts, such as Google Drawings, Lucidchart, or Draw.io.
  3. Computer with Internet access.

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. Group Formation and Initial Discussion - Form your groups, discuss, and choose a real-life scenario to work on.
  2. Planning - Plan the execution stages of the project. Remember to divide tasks among group members and manage time so that the work is completed before the deadline.
  3. Creation of the Story/Scenario - Develop a story or scenario that has various possibilities based on decisions. Note down all important information and possible decisions.
  4. Drawing the Flowchart - Draw the flowchart of the situation. Test different scenarios to ensure that the flowchart is correct and complete.
  5. Report Elaboration - Write the project report, following the structure of: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Project Deliverables

All deliveries must be made jointly by the group. The deliveries include:

1. The Flowchart The flowchart must be delivered in physical or digital format, depending on the chosen method for drawing. It will be evaluated based on its correctness, completeness, and clarity of presentation.

2. The Written Report The report should discuss the applicability and relevance of flowcharts, how they were used in the project, the process of creating the story/scenario and the flowchart, the difficulties encountered, decisions made, results obtained, and conclusions about the project.

  • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, relevance of flowcharts in the real world, project objective.
  • Development: Explanation of flowchart theory, detailed description of the activity (group formation, initial discussion, creation of the scenario, flowchart drawing, report elaboration), project result (the final flowchart and its discussion).
  • Conclusions: Recap the main points, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project.
  • Bibliography: Indicate the sources used to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
