They are the first numbers we learn in life, and even though other categories of numbers (such as integers and rationals) may seem more complicated at first glance, these categories are built from natural numbers. Therefore, understanding natural numbers and the operations we can perform with them is the first step to understanding mathematics as a whole.
In this project, we will explore different ways to use natural numbers, practicing the four fundamental operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We will also understand how operations with natural numbers can have practical applications in our daily lives. In the end, you will see how we learn mathematics not only to pass tests but to solve real-world problems!
Introduction
Operations with natural numbers are the basis for almost all calculations we make. Without them, we could not add up our savings, divide a pizza among friends, multiply a cake recipe, or subtract an expense from our budget. Knowing how to perform these operations is crucial for our financial autonomy and our ability to solve everyday problems.
In school, we learn these operations in a theoretical way, practicing with exercises and problems. But learning doesn't have to stop there! We can apply this knowledge in practical, challenging, and, why not, fun situations. Let's learn mathematics by creating a board game, in which operations with natural numbers will be the tools that will help us win!
Practical Activity: Mathematical Game 'Natural Operators'
Project Objective
The main objective of this project is to develop group cohesion and deepen students' knowledge of operations with natural numbers through the creation of an educational board game. The project will last for four weeks and will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students.
Project Description
Each group will be responsible for creating a board game that involves the four basic operations with natural numbers. The board should be made on a sheet of cardboard, and the students will be responsible for creating the rules, questions, and traps of the game. The theme of the board is free for the group's choice, it can be an adventure game, a race, an expedition, etc.
The game should be designed to be played by 2 to 4 players. Teams should be aware that the game should be educational, easy to understand, but challenging enough to keep players interested.
In addition, the created game will serve as a didactic tool to be used in the classroom for the practice of mathematical operations, thus, fun and learning will go hand in hand.
Required Materials
- Cardboard sheet or card paper.

- Material to make player markers (e.g., bottle caps).
- Post-its or small papers for questions and traps.

Step by Step

Gather the group and discuss ideas for the game theme. Remember that it should be educational and involve mathematical operations.
