Roman numerals are a numerical system that originated during the time of the Roman Empire. This system is composed of seven letters from the Latin alphabet: I, V, X, L, C, D, M, which correspond respectively to the numbers 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000. Instead of using a positional system, like the modern decimal system, Roman numerals are written by combining letters and adding value.

Although they may seem strange or even obsolete to us today, Roman numerals played an important role in human history. They were used by the Romans for everything, from keeping financial records to denoting dates, and continue to be used in a variety of ways in contemporary society. Project Objective

The objective of this project is to deepen students' understanding of the Roman numerical system, its applications, and impact on society, through a fun and engaging approach.

Project Description

Groups of 3 to 5 students must create a game board that involves the conversion between Roman numerals and decimals. The game should be designed to reinforce the understanding of Roman numerals through questions and challenges.

In addition to designating a space in your home or school to play, students must create challenging question cards that test other students' understanding of the conversion between decimals and Roman numerals. It is suggested that the game also includes rules that reward group cooperation and surprise elements to make the game more exciting.

The game board, question cards, and rules should be created by the students themselves, using recyclable and easily accessible materials.

Required Materials

  • Cardboard or cardstock (for the game board)
  • Colored paper (for the cards)
  • Colored pencils or pens (for marking the board and writing on the cards)
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Die

Activity Steps
