Project Objective:

The proposal of this project is that students, organized into groups of 3 to 5, explore a real scenario, collecting, organizing, and interpreting data from their neighborhood or community. The subjects can range from mapping the most common types of stores in the area, to understanding the traffic flow at different times, to determining the amount of green areas per inhabitant, among others.

Detailed Project Description:

Students, together in their groups, should create a small survey that seeks to discover something about the neighborhood or community where they live or study. Each group should focus on a specific theme (e.g. local commerce, traffic, green areas, etc.).

With the collected data in hand, students should organize it in tables, and then create graphs that make it easier to understand and interpret this information.

Necessary Materials:

  • Paper and pen for notes
  • Camera or cell phone with camera (optional)
  • Computer with internet access for research and report writing
  • Online tool or software for creating graphs (e.g. Google Sheets, Excel)

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide to the Activity:

  1. Define the work group (3 to 5 students)
  2. The groups must choose a study theme for the project and develop a research question.
  3. Each group must develop a data collection plan, which may include direct observations, counts, measurements, and/or internet research.
  4. Execute the data collection plan.
  5. Organize the collected data into a table.
  6. Transform the data from the table into graphs, choosing the most appropriate type for the information being presented.
  7. Analyze the graphs and interpret the data. What do they reveal about your study theme?

Project deliverables include a table of data collected, graphs generated, and a written report. The report must follow the structure below:

  1. Introduction: Provide context for the chosen theme, its relevance, and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project. Explain why you chose this theme and what you expected to discover through the research.

  2. Development: Describe the theory of data interpretation, explaining what it is and why it is important. Describe the methodology you used to collect and interpret the data. Detail the process of creating graphs and how they connect with the collected data. Present and discuss the results obtained.

  3. Conclusions: Returning to the theme and project objectives, discuss what was learned from this activity. What did the data reveal? Were there any surprises or confirmations of previously established hypotheses? What lessons can be drawn from these results?

  4. Bibliography: List all the sources used to carry out the work, including books, websites, videos, etc.
