Track and Field: Introduction

Context

Athletics is recognized as the oldest form of sports competition. Its events are categorized into jumps, throws, races, combined events, and race walking. Through the study of athletics, we can better understand the mechanics of human movement, the importance of discipline, physical endurance, speed, and strength.

This sport is considered the mother of all sports, as its basic fundamentals such as running, jumping, and throwing are also the foundation for many other sports. Athletics competitions are exciting events that challenge human limits in terms of speed, strength, and endurance. Furthermore, it not only develops physical ability but also promotes discipline, teamwork, and self-confidence.

Athletics has a rich history and is an intrinsic sport to the Olympic Games, reinforcing its relevance in the sports scene. In our contemporary society, athletics plays an important role in promoting physical and mental well-being, as well as inspiring excellence.

The practice of athletics significantly contributes to health and physical fitness. It improves motor coordination, muscle strength, the cardiovascular system, among other benefits. Additionally, by participating in athletics events, students are encouraged to develop skills such as determination, perseverance, and teamwork.

Practical Activity: Mini Athletics Olympics

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to provide students with an in-depth understanding of Athletics through practice, research, and analysis. Students will organize into groups, carry out mini athletics events, record observations, research official rules, and the benefits of these activities for the human body. Finally, they will discuss the results and present a final report.

Detailed Project Description:

Each group of 3 to 5 students will be responsible for organizing and conducting three athletics events: a race, a jump, and a throw. The groups must choose the modalities they wish to practice, carry out the activities, record the results, research official rules and the benefits of these activities for health, analyze the results, and finally prepare a final report.

Required Materials:

  • Measuring tape
  • Result recording sheets
  • Appropriate equipment (ball for throwing, hurdles for jumps, etc.)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Group Formation: Students must divide into groups of 3 to 5 members.

  2. Selection of Modalities: Each group must choose a race, a jump modality, and a throwing modality to perform. They should research the rules and characteristics of each chosen modality.

  3. Event Execution: Each group must organize and carry out the chosen events. The final classification of each event must be recorded.

  4. Analysis and Report: After the events, each group must analyze the results, connect them with the studied official rules, and research the impacts of practicing these activities on the human body. Finally, they must consolidate the information and impressions into a final report.

Project Deliverables:

The project will be completed with the delivery of a written report following the structure below:

Introduction: Students must contextualize the theme of Athletics, its relevance and real-world application, and the objective of this project.

Development: Students must describe the chosen modalities, the official rules of each, and how the events unfolded. They must also report on the impacts of these activities on the human body, according to their research. Finally, they must present and discuss the results of the events.

Conclusion: Students must conclude the work by summarizing their main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn from the project.

Bibliography: Students must indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

Through this project, students must apply what they have learned about Athletics, teamwork, time management for organizing and conducting events, and report writing.
