Measure Sports: Introduction

Contextualization

Mark sports are a specific branch in the sports universe that play a key role in the social structure of our society. Like other sports manifestations, mark sports represent a universe of values, emotions, identities, and social practices that permeate daily life in various aspects.

Let's initially think about the concept of mark sports. These modalities are characterized by obtaining points, or marks, derived from specific technical executions. Some classic examples of mark sports are track and field, gymnastics, swimming, and weightlifting. In all of them, we see the dispute focused on the search for overcoming personal and collective marks.

In these sports, the rules are clearly defined and the contours of what is allowed and what is forbidden are very well designed. This allows for fair competition, in which each athlete or team has the opportunity to show their skills and overcome their opponents through their physical, technical, and strategic ability.

Importance and Relevance of Mark Sports

Mark sports have great social importance. They contribute to the formation of identities, to the construction of social relationships, and to personal development. In addition, they are vehicles for values such as cooperation, respect, dedication, effort, and overcoming.

No less important, mark sports are a major industry. They move billions of dollars a year, generate jobs, and are a powerful vector for development. They are, therefore, an essential element in our contemporary society.

To delve deeper into these themes, I suggest reading the following resources:

  • Book "Sport and Society", by Pierre Bourdieu: It is a fundamental theoretical reference, which discusses the role of sport in society and the importance of sport as a social representation.
  • Documentary "The Olympics of the Modern Era", available on Netflix: A historical and social portrait of the Olympics, from its creation at the end of the 19th century to the present day.
  • Articles from the website "Portal Educação" about Physical Education and Sports: A variety of texts on different aspects of sports, including its history, its social importance, and its role in education.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Olympic Mark Sports in the Community

Project Objective

This project seeks to engage students in the study and practice of mark sports, providing a real and applicable context for learning. Students will research, analyze, plan, and, finally, organize a small mark sports event in their community, based on the model of the Olympic Games.

Detailed Project Description

The groups will be responsible for selecting mark sports that are practicable in their communities given the available resources. They will research the rules, history, tactics, and techniques necessary to practice these sports. In addition, they must understand the scoring system and the impact of these sports on society.

The students will then have to organize a small sporting event, where they will invite other students, teachers, family, and friends to participate as athletes or spectators. At this event, the groups will be responsible for everything: from promotion, venue setup, judges, scoring, to the awards ceremony.

In addition, students will need to engage in a critical analysis of these sports, discussing topics such as gender equality, inclusion, marketing, among others.

Required Materials

  1. Internet access for research
  2. Writing material (notebook, pen, etc.)
  3. Sports equipment, depending on the chosen sports
  4. Venue to hold the event

Detailed step by step to carry out the activity

  1. Formation of groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Selection of mark sports to be studied and practiced.
  3. Research on the chosen sports: rules, history, techniques, tactics, scoring system.
  4. Planning and organization of the sporting event: choice of venue, promotion, structuring, definition of athletes, refereeing, scoring.
  5. Holding the sporting event.
  6. Critical analysis of the chosen sports.
  7. Preparation of the final project report.

The project should last a minimum of 12 hours per student, distributed between research, planning, execution of the event, and elaboration of the report.

Project Deliverables and Conclusion

After carrying out the practical activity, students should prepare a report detailing the entire process. This text should:

  • Start with an introduction, where they should contextualize the project, present the chosen sports, and the objective of the activity.
  • In the development, students should describe all the stages of the activity, from the selection of sports, the planning of the event, its execution, and the critical analysis. The theoretical concepts learned should be discussed in relation to the practical activity.
  • In the conclusion, students should reflect on what they learned and how these sports impact society. They should also present their conclusions about the event held.
  • Finally, students should list all research sources in the bibliography.

This report will be the final deliverable of the project and should be submitted up to two weeks after the event. The project should establish a practical connection between the theoretical concepts learned and their application in the real world, providing students with a meaningful learning experience.
