Skateboarding is a sport that emerged in the late 1950s as a way for surfers to train even when sea conditions were not ideal. Since then, skateboarding has evolved and diversified into various disciplines, attracting fans and practitioners from around the world.

Skateboarding is currently an Olympic sport, with competitions that draw international athletes and crowds of fans. But skateboarding is not just a sport - it is also a form of cultural expression, influencing music, fashion, and art.

Skateboarding competitions are generally divided into distinct disciplines, such as street (with typical street obstacles), vertical (occurring on steep ramps), and freestyle (with various maneuvers performed on a flat surface).

Introduction

The project we propose involves an in-depth study of skateboarding, its origins, its disciplines, and the culture surrounding it. Students will be encouraged to see skateboarding not only as an object but as a social activity that encompasses physical skills, cultural expression, and interaction with urban space.

The need for balance, coordination, and strength makes skateboarding a significant physical activity. On the other hand, the need to overcome obstacles and risk new maneuvers develops resilience and creativity.

The objective of this project is, therefore, to use skateboarding as a means for students to explore various topics: from the physics laws that allow skateboarding to function to skate culture and its impact on society.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Skate: From History to Practice"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is for students to study the history of skateboarding, its disciplines, how to maneuver, and who were and are the main skateboarders in the world. In addition, they will learn about the physics involved and will have to demonstrate, in practice, what they have learned through a presentation.

Detailed Project Description

The activity will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group should research and present a report and a presentation on the history of skateboarding, its disciplines, the physics involved, maneuvers, and the main skateboarders of all time. Students will be encouraged to use visual resources such as photos and videos in their presentation.

In addition, each group will be responsible for demonstrating a skateboarding maneuver. For this, they can use a real skateboard or, if that is not possible, a miniature version. The maneuver does not need to be complex, but students must be able to explain the physics behind it.

Required Materials

  1. Computer with internet access for research.
  2. Real skateboard or miniature for demonstrating maneuvers.
  3. Camera to record the execution of the maneuver.

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Research the history of skateboarding, its disciplines, and the main skateboarders of all time.

  3. Research the physics of skateboarding and the most popular maneuvers.

  4. Write a report with all the researched information. Remember, the report needs to have: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

  5. Plan and practice a presentation that summarizes your findings. The presentation should include a demonstration of a skateboarding maneuver (real or with a miniature).

  6. Record the execution of the maneuver with a camera.

  7. Present the work to the class.

Project Deliverables

Students must deliver a written report and a presentation that includes the demonstration of a skateboarding maneuver. The report must follow the structure of a scientific article, with Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

  • In the report, the Introduction should contextualize skateboarding, its relevance and application, and explain the project's objective.
  • The Development should detail the history of skateboarding, its disciplines, and the main skateboarders, as well as explain the maneuver that will be demonstrated and the physics involved in it.
  • In the Conclusion, students must explain the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn from the project.
  • The Bibliography should list all sources of information used in the project.

The presentation should be a synthesis of the report, including the demonstration of a skateboarding maneuver. The demonstration must be accompanied by an explanation of the physics involved in the maneuver.

The execution of the project should be an opportunity for students to work together, building knowledge collaboratively and learning to manage time and solve problems in a proactive and creative way.
