Contextualization
The nervous system is a complex network of nerves and cells that transmit signals between different parts of the body. It is essentially the body's control system, and can be divided into two main components: the central nervous system (CNS), consisting of the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), consisting of nerves that connect the CNS to the rest of the body.
Understanding concepts like neurons, synapses, the somatic and autonomic nervous systems, and the effects of psychoactive substances on our organisms is fundamental when studying the nervous system. Throughout this project, you will be able to deepen your knowledge on all of this fascinating and intricate structure.
Why study the nervous system?
The nervous system is the foundation of everything we are. Without it, we would not be able to think, feel, move or even survive. Through it, we are able to interpret what is happening around us, responding appropriately. Furthermore, having a good understanding of it is crucial for anyone who wishes to pursue careers in healthcare, neuroscience, psychology, among others.
In a social context, understanding the functioning of the nervous system and the effects of psychoactive substances in it is of utmost importance for a more conscious and informed society, capable of making better decisions regarding their health and well-being.
Hands-on Activity - "Exploring the Nervous System"
Activity Title:
"Navigating the Nervous System"
Project Objectives:
- Understand the structure and functions of the human nervous system.
- Understand how psychoactive substances can affect the nervous system.
- Develop collaboration, research, presentation, and writing skills.
Detailed Project Description:
Groups will be responsible for creating an interactive presentation of the nervous system, including its major components, functions, and the effects of psychoactive substances on it. The project will culminate with a presentation of a 'Tour' of the nervous system, where each group will explain their research and findings. This project requires research, planning, and hands-on implementation.
Materials:
- Books and online articles for research.
- Drawing and painting materials to create the models.
- Presentation software (e.g. PowerPoint, Prezi, or similar).
- Internet access for research and multimedia resources.
Detailed Step-by-Step:
1. Team Formation & Planning (3 hours)
Students should organize themselves in teams of 3-5. Inside each group, they should divide tasks such as researching, designing the model, creating the presentations, etc.
2. Research (6 hours)
Groups should research the following topics:
- Central Nervous System
- Peripheral Nervous System
- Neurons
- Synapses
- Somatic and Autonomic Nervous System
- Effects of psychoactive substances (alcohol, illegal drugs, prescription drugs) on the nervous system
3. Model Building (8 hours)
Each group should create a physical model of the concepts researched, using any materials of their choice. The model should be detailed and include all of the components researched.
4. Presentation (6 hours)
Groups should create an interactive presentation, using the physical model and multimedia resources (videos, slides, etc) to explain the concepts and functions of the nervous system, and the effects of psychoactive substances on it.
5. Paper Writing (5 hours)
Each group should write a paper detailing the project process, concepts researched, and findings. The paper should include the following sections:
- Introduction: Contextualization of the nervous system, its importance, and the goal of the project.
- Development: Detailing the research process, planning, model building and presentation, explaining the concepts of the nervous system and the effects of psychoactive substances on it.
- Conclusion: Review the importance of the nervous system, discuss the findings based on the research and reflect on the project.
- References: Register of sources used for the research.
6. Final Presentation (2 hours)
Each group will present their 'Tour' of the nervous system to the class, answering questions from their peers and the teacher. The written paper will be due after the presentation.
