Contextualization

Life on our planet presents an incredible diversity with millions of different types of living beings. However, all of them share a common element: the cell. Cells are the fundamental unit of life, whose study allows us to understand much about how living beings work.

Cells can be quite complex, but all have some basic features. They have a membrane that separates them from the external environment, contain a substance called cytoplasm, and have genetic material that directs their activities. Cells also have a wide variety of smaller structures called organelles, each with its own specific functions.

Different types of cells have different types and arrangements of organelles, depending on their specific functions. For example, muscle cells have many mitochondria, which provide energy for muscle contraction, while liver cells have many lysosomes, which are used to break down toxic substances.

Understanding the basic organization of cells is vital for a variety of fields, from medicine to biodiversity conservation. For example, doctors need to understand cell organization to understand how diseases affect the human body and how to treat them. Similarly, conservation biologists need to understand cell organization to understand how organisms respond to changes in their environments.

Cells are not only important for science, but also have practical applications. They are used in industry to make a variety of products, from cheese to medicines. They are also used in research to develop new technologies and in medicine to develop treatments.

Hands-on Activity: "Journey Through the Cell"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to familiarize students with the organization of cells. To do this, they will create a three-dimensional model of a cell and present it to the class.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be responsible for creating a three-dimensional model of a cell, which can be animal or plant, using various materials. The idea is that the model is large enough for students to "travel" through it, discussing the functions of each organelle.

Materials Required

  • Recyclable materials (e.g. cardboard boxes, PET bottles, bottle caps, etc.)
  • Gouache paint in various colors
  • Paintbrushes
  • Card stock
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Tape
  • Markers

Step-by-Step

  1. Each group should research the chosen cell structure (animal or plant) and design a project for the model, indicating where each organelle will be located and how they will be represented.

  2. With the project ready, students should start assembling the basic structure of the cell using recyclable materials.

  3. Then, students should represent the organelles using the chosen materials, always taking care to make it clear which is which.

  4. After the complete assembly of the cell, students should paint and decorate the model to make it more realistic.

  5. With the model ready, students should prepare a class presentation where they will explain what each organelle is and what its function is.

Project Deliverables

After completing the practical part of the project, groups should write a document reporting in the format of a report. This document should include an Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

  • Introduction: Here, students should contextualize the theme of cell organization, explain its relevance and application in the real world, and describe the objective of the project.

  • Development: In this section, students should detail the theory of cell organization, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained with the model and presentation.

  • Conclusion: The students should conclude the report by returning to their main points, explaining the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn about the project.

  • Bibliography: Students should indicate all the sources they used to carry out the research and complete the project. These can be books, websites, videos, among others.

With the implementation of this project, it is expected that students will acquire solid notions of the basic organization of cells and develop socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem solving, creative thinking and proactivity.
