Chemistry is a fascinating science, as it is present in all aspects of our lives, from the food we eat to the air we breathe. Particularly, chemical transformations, one of the pillars of chemistry, have a variety of practical applications. In this project, we will focus on understanding chemical transformations and how we can identify them in our daily lives.

Chemical transformations occur when one or more substances are converted into new substances with different properties. For example, when we make toast, we transform the bread (initial substance) into toast (new substance with a different taste and texture). Have you noticed how the simple act of cooking is full of chemical transformations? This is present in numerous other examples in our daily lives, and during this project, we will recognize and understand them.

Importance of the Theme

The ability to recognize and understand chemical transformations is essential for many aspects of modern life. For example, the production of medicines, food, and cleaning products involves a series of chemical transformations. Furthermore, many current challenges, such as air and water pollution, clean energy production, and the development of new materials, are directly linked to chemical transformations.

Knowing how substances react and transform is also important for us to understand and protect our planet. For instance, the understanding of how greenhouse gases cause climate change is based on the comprehension of chemical transformations.

Practical Activity

Title: The Effervescent Volcano - An Adventure in Chemical Transformations

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to understand chemical transformations in practice through the creation of an effervescent volcano.

Project Description

In groups of three to five students, each team will make a 'volcano' with simple materials and cause an 'eruption' using a basic chemical reaction. This practical activity not only illustrates a chemical transformation but also shows that these transformations can produce remarkable physical effects.

Necessary Materials

The materials needed for the project are:

  1. 1 small plastic bottle (like a water bottle);
  2. Paper mache or clay;
  3. Vinegar;
  4. Baking soda;
  5. Red food coloring (optional);
  6. Liquid detergent (optional).

Step by Step

  1. Building the Volcano: Start by molding the paper mache or clay around the plastic bottle, shaping it to look like a volcano. Make sure to leave the bottle opening accessible. Wait for the clay or paper mache to dry completely.

  2. Preparing the Effervescent Mixture: Place about 3 tablespoons of baking soda in the bottle in your volcano. If desired, you can add red food coloring and a little liquid detergent to create a more realistic 'lava' effect.

  3. Volcano Eruption: Now, the moment everyone has been waiting for! To start the eruption, add vinegar to the bottle. Step back and observe the chemical reaction happen. Where did the 'lava' come from? That was a chemical transformation!

Project Deliverables

After completing the practical activity, each group must produce a report documenting the experience. The structure of the report should be as follows:

  1. Introduction: Provide context on the theme of chemical transformations, explaining what they are and where they occur. Discuss the relevance of chemical transformations in the real world and present the objective of the practical project.

  2. Development: Describe in detail the activity carried out. Begin with the theory behind chemical transformations, emphasizing the reaction that occurred in the effervescent volcano experience. Continue with the description of the methodology used, explaining step by step how the volcano was built and the 'eruption' occurred. Share the observed results, such as the volcano eruption and the produced 'lava', and discuss these results in light of the theory presented earlier.

  3. Conclusion: Summarize the main points of the activity, highlighting the learnings obtained. Write about how the activity helped understand the concept of chemical transformations and what conclusions can be drawn from the project.

  4. Bibliography: List all sources of information used in the project, including books, websites, videos, and other resources.
