Although we often do not realize it, we live in a world shaped by science.
It gives us the ability to understand nature and the universe, provides us with the tools to solve complex problems, and develop new materials and medicines that improve - and save - lives. Without science, we would not have many of the modern conveniences we consider essential, such as smartphones, computers, and advanced medicines.
However, it is also important to understand that science has two sides. Yes, it brings many benefits, but it can also have negative socio-environmental impacts. For example, the production of certain synthetic materials can harm the environment when not done sustainably. Therefore, it is crucial that, as informed citizens of the future, we understand how science impacts society and the environment.
Science and Its Importance
In this project, we will focus on the impacts of science on the development of medicines and synthetic materials. Specifically, we will explore how science enables the creation of these products and also consider the possible positive and negative impacts they have on society and the environment.
The development of medicines and synthetic materials is an area of vital importance for humanity. New medicines have the potential to cure previously invincible diseases and improve the quality of life for millions of people. In addition, synthetic materials have a wide range of applications, from clothing production to manufacturing automotive parts.
However, there are also important issues to consider regarding the socio-environmental impact of these advancements. Can production processes be polluting? Are the products biodegradable or recyclable? What are the ethical implications of the production and distribution of these products? Therefore, it is essential that we learn to address these complex issues in a critical and informed manner.

Activity Title: "The Science Behind Medicines and Synthetic Materials"
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to allow students to collaboratively and practically investigate how science contributes to the creation of medicines and synthetic materials, and what are the resulting socio-environmental impacts.
Detailed Project Description
Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, will choose a common medicine or synthetic material (for example, acetaminophen, a medicine, or polystyrene, a synthetic material used to make food containers) and conduct research to understand how this product is produced, what are its benefits, and socio-environmental impacts.
Students are encouraged to explore the topic with creativity, using different sources of information such as books, videos, and reliable websites. It is important that students also take into account the different perspectives of the stakeholders involved, such as the industry that manufactures the product, consumers, and the environment.

Detailed Step-by-Step
- Group Formation: Students should divide into groups of 3 to 5 members.
- Choice of medicine or synthetic material to be studied: Each group should choose a medicine or synthetic material to research.
- Research: Students should research online and in books about how the medicine/synthetic material is produced, what are its benefits, and socio-environmental impacts.
- Analysis and Synthesis: Students should analyze the collected information and synthesize it into key points.
- Report Elaboration: Each group of students should prepare a report addressing the topics of introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography used.
Report Elaboration
The report should be a critical reflection based on the research conducted. It should contain, but is not limited to, four main sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.
- Introduction: Brief contextualization of the chosen medicine/synthetic material, its relevance and application, as well as the project's objective.
- Development: Explanation of the theory behind the production of the medicine/synthetic material, detailed explanation of the research conducted, indication of the methodology used, and presentation and discussion of the results obtained, focusing on the benefits and socio-environmental impacts.
- Conclusions: Recapitulation of the main points, explanation of the learnings obtained, and conclusions drawn from the project.
- Bibliography: Indication of the sources used for the project.
Project Deliverables
Students must deliver, at the end of the project, the written report and an oral presentation exposing the main points of their research. This presentation should last about 10 minutes and aims to allow students to demonstrate the knowledge acquired and skills developed during the project.
Throughout the project, each student must record their participation hours, which should range from two to four hours, and the activity must be completed and delivered within a week after its assignment.
