Rocks are fundamental parts of our planet, so essential in fact, that they constitute their own layer, the geosphere. There are three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Each type has a distinct origin and formation process which in turn causes great variation in their appearance, texture, and composition. Understanding these differences helps us understand the history of the Earth better.
Rocks are not just inanimate objects; they are the base of many aspects of our daily lives. Constructions, roads, monuments, sculptures, among others, are examples of direct applications of different rocks in our society. Furthermore, some rocks contain precious minerals and metals which make them valuable to the mining industry.
What is more, sedimentary rocks sometimes contain fossils which depict the life of past eras. With these fossils, we can study the evolution of species, prehistoric life, and even climate changes that took place thousands of years ago.
Understanding the types of rocks and their formations provides a window to the past, enabling us to comprehend the history of the Earth and the evolution of life.
Through this project, we will delve into geological wonders in the search for greater understanding about rocks and their importance.
Hands-on Activity - "Unveiling the World of Rocks"
Goal
The goal of this project is to develop a broad understanding of the three main types of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic), their characteristics, formation processes, and real-world applications.
Students will also explore the relationship between sedimentary rocks and fossils, addressing the formation of fossils in different geological time periods.
Project Overview
Students will be divided into groups of 3-5 participants. Each group will be responsible for developing a three-dimensional model that represents the three types of rocks, their formation processes, and the formation of fossils in sedimentary rocks. The model should be explanatory and visually engaging.
Along with the model, each group should prepare an oral presentation explaining their project, including the differences between the types of rocks, how they were formed, and where we might find said rocks and fossils in our environment.
Students should expect to spend five to ten hours to complete the project, which is due in one month's time.

Step-by-Step Activity

Conduct research using the resources recommended in the “Resources for Study” section and any other sources you can find. Make sure you have a good understanding of the three types of rocks and the formation of fossils.

Sketch an idea for your 3D model. Remember that your model should visually represent the three types of rocks and their formation processes. Consider making layers to represent different geological time periods in the part of the model that shows sedimentary rock.

Using the materials available, build your model based on your sketch. Use the clay to create the rocks, varying the colours to differentiate each type. To create the fossils in the layers of sedimentary rock, use the small stones or pebbles.

Add details and finish the painting of your project.

Now that your model is ready, prepare an oral presentation explaining each aspect of your model. Your presentation should be clear and informative.

Practice the presentation as a group until you feel confident delivering it to the class.
Project Deliverables
Aside from the 3D model and oral presentation, each group should hand in a written report detailing the project. The report should contain the following elements:
