Contextualization

Text typology is a fundamental area in Portuguese language studies, which allows us to categorize texts based on their formal and structural characteristics. Among the various typologies, our attention in this project falls on narrative practices. The narrative is a type of textual construction that aims to tell a story, be it real or fictional, through a temporal sequence of events.

Knowing and understanding the narrative typology is essential for the formation of a student, as it is a primary tool for the production of diverse texts - from a personal account to the creation of a work of fiction. In addition, the narrative practice is used in many disciplines, such as History, Geography and even in Science, when we tell the trajectory of a discovery or phenomenon.

Narrating is an art, and like all art, it involves technique. Key concepts such as plot, character, time, space, and narrator are fundamental to building a cohesive and engaging narrative. Each element has its function and role in the plot, and the way they are worked on by the author can mean the success or failure of a story.

The narrative practice is not limited to the classroom; on the contrary, it is present in many aspects of daily life. Let's watch a movie? There's the narrative. Let's play a video game? There's the narrative. Let's read a book? There's the narrative. Narratives are a privileged means of transmitting culture, values, and stories that shape our understanding of the world.

This project aims to provide students with a deep understanding of narrative practices, but, above all, it intends that they be able to apply this knowledge in a creative and original way in their textual productions. Group work aims to encourage debate, exchange of ideas and negotiation, essential skills for the formation of citizens.

Practical Activity: "Narrating Our Story"

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is for students to apply their understanding of narrative practices in a practical and creative way, producing a collective story that contains all the characteristic elements of a narrative. The activity also seeks to stimulate teamwork, collaboration, and negotiation of ideas and paths for the story, as well as the management of time and resources necessary for the completion of the project.

Detailed Project Description

Groups of 3 to 5 students must create an original story that includes the following elements of a narrative: plot, characters, time, space and narrator. In addition to the written production, the group must also produce a podcast or video reporting this story, bringing the narrative to an oral/visual modality.

Materials Required

• Computer or tablet with internet access
• Audio or video editing software (can be any free app available on the web)
• Camera or microphone (for recording the podcast or video)

Detailed Step by Step for Carrying Out the Activity

1. The group should meet (in person or virtually) to plan the story. This is the time to decide on the plot, the characters, the time and space in which the story takes place and who will be the narrator. Decisions should be made collectively, promoting the negotiation of ideas and consensus.

2. After planning, each student will be responsible for developing a part of the story, distributed according to the narrative elements. For example, one student can focus on describing the characters, another on the plot, another on time and space, another on the narrator's perspective, etc.

3. With all the parts ready, the group should meet to put together the final story, fitting the parts together in a coherent and fluid way.

4. The group should then produce the podcast or video narrating the story. This task can be divided among the group members, with each one contributing a part of the recording.

5. Finally, the group must write a report on the project, addressing the theory of narrative practices and the application of this theory in the practical activity. This report must contain all four main topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions and Bibliography used.

Project Deliverables

The completion of the activity should result in two main deliverables:

1. The finalized story, delivered in both written format and podcast or video format;
2. A detailed report on the project, with the following topics: Introduction (contextualizing the relevance of narrative practices and the objective of the project), Development (presenting the theory of narrative practices, detailing the activity carried out, indicating the methodology used and presenting the results obtained), Conclusions (retaking the main points, making explicit the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn about the project) and Bibliography (indicating the sources of study used for the project).

It should be noted that the report should be written in such a way as to complement the practical work carried out and demonstrate the understanding and application of the theoretical concepts studied. It is recommended that students be guided by the proposed topics, organizing their ideas and thoughts to present a clear, objective and relevant report.
