Contextualization

Throughout the centuries, humanity has developed the ability to tell stories as an integral part of our culture. With this, the immeasurable value of narrative is understood, whether in written, spoken, or even through signs and drawings. Narrative is responsible for allowing us to share experiences and experiences, transmit culture, stories, and values to future generations.

In the Portuguese language, narrative is one of the fundamental textual genres, alongside description and argumentation. Within the narrative genre, we find several subgenres, such as the fable, the chronicle, the short story, the novella, the novel, and many others. Each subgenre has its own characteristics, but all follow the basic structure of the narrative, which includes the introduction, the development, and the conclusion of the story.

Introduction

Narrative is, basically, the art of telling stories. It is characterized by the presence of elements such as characters, plot, space, time and narrator. The narrator, in turn, can be an observer or a character, and his vision and interpretation of events are what guide the reader through the story.

There are many forms of narrative, and each one can teach us something different. For example, a journalistic narrative will present us with a portrait of the real world, while a fictional narrative can take us to fantastic and imaginary worlds. Regardless of the type of narrative, it is important to remember that they all have one thing in common: the intention of transmitting a message or lesson.

• Book "How and why to read the Brazilian novel", by Antonio Candido. This book is an essential reference for understanding the history and evolution of the novel in Brazil.
• Website of the "Nova Escola", which has a series of articles and activities on textual genres, including narrative.
• YouTube: Channel "Prof. Noslen", which has videos explaining in a playful and interesting way the characteristics and elements of the narrative.
• Book "What is literature", by José de Nicola, which introduces the study of literature and its main genres, including narrative.

By the end of this project, we hope that you will be able to identify and analyze the characteristics and elements of a narrative, and also that you will be able to create your own stories using these elements.

Practical Activity

Title: "Telling Our Story"

Project objective:

The objective of this project is to become familiar with the structure of the narrative and its main characteristics through the creation of an original story. In addition, it aims to promote teamwork, creativity, time management, and writing skills.

Detailed description of the project:

Each group will be responsible for creating an original narrative. The story can be of any genre (fairy tales, suspense, science fiction, etc.), as long as it follows the basic structure of a narrative, which includes introduction, development (conflict), and conclusion (conflict resolution).

Required materials:

• Paper and pencil/pen for drafting;
• Computer with internet access for research and writing.
• Word processing software (such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs) for the final draft.

Step-by-step detailed:

1. Planning: The group should meet to discuss story ideas. It is worth remembering that a good narrative usually involves a conflict that the main character must resolve. After defining the story, the group should make a draft of the plot, detailing the main parts: introduction, development and conclusion.

2. Research: Before starting to write, the group should research the chosen genre, looking for common characteristics and elements.

3. Writing: With the plan and research in hand, the group should start writing the story. We recommend that each student write a part, so that everyone participates in the process.

4. Reviewing: After finishing writing, the group should review the text, looking for grammar errors and coherence and cohesion.

5. Finalization: Finally, the group should write the project report, which should include an introduction on the theme of the narrative, the development explaining about the theory of narrative and the process of creating the story, the conclusion summarizing what was learned and the bibliography used.

Deliverables:

The group must deliver the finished story and the report.

The story must follow the structure of the narrative and be original. It must be delivered in the format of a text document, preferably typed.

The report must follow the proposed structure of Introduction, Development, Conclusion and Bibliography. It must be delivered as follows:

1. Introduction: Should contextualize the theme of the narrative, its relevance and application in the real world, as well as the objective of this project.

2. Development: The group should explain the theory of narrative, explain the process of creating the story, the methodology used and present and discuss the results obtained.

3. Conclusion: The students should conclude the work by referring to their main points, explaining the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn about the project.

4. Bibliography: The group should indicate the sources on which they based themselves to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, among others.

Students will be assessed on the content of the report and the originality and coherence of the story created.
