Ecology: Ecological Relationships

Contextualization

Ecological relationships, also known as biological interactions, are the various types of interactions that occur among living beings that cohabit the same environment. They can occur between individuals of the same species (intra-specific) or between individuals of different species (inter-specific) and are essential for maintaining the balance of ecosystems.

These interactions can be classified in a simplified way as harmonious, where all involved parties benefit, or disharmonious, where only one party benefits, often causing harm to the other party. Some examples of harmonious relationships are: mutualism, commensalism, and society. Examples of disharmonious relationships include: competition, parasitism, and predation.

Understanding these concepts is of utmost importance in the current world. After all, ecological relationships are the foundation of ecosystems and, therefore, of life on Earth. They are directly impacted by human actions, which alter natural environments and disrupt these relationships, causing harm to biodiversity and, consequently, to our own quality of life.

Considering the important role they play in nature, ecological relationships are also fundamental for the development of conservation policies and for the sustainable management of natural resources. Unfortunately, many times we, as human beings, harm these relationships without even being aware of it. Therefore, understanding these concepts can help us make more conscious and responsible decisions, aiming for the well-being of the planet as a whole.

Practical Activity: "Eco-Theater: Representing Ecological Relationships"

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is for students to learn about ecological relationships through a practical and interactive activity, in which they will have to create and present a theatrical representation of ecological relationships.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be responsible for choosing a type of ecological relationship (harmonious or disharmonious) and creating a short theater scene, approximately ten minutes long, representing that relationship. The scene should be based on research and scientific information about the chosen relationship, however, students are encouraged to be creative and use metaphors or analogies to facilitate understanding.

Necessary Materials:

Each group may need different materials depending on the scene they decide to create. However, some materials that could be useful are: costumes, props, cardboard, paint, colored paper, glue, scissors, among others. Students will also need internet access to research the chosen ecological relationship.

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Formation of groups and choice of the type of ecological relationship to be represented.
  2. Research on the chosen relationship. Study in detail the functioning, importance, and impact of this relationship on the ecosystem.
  3. Sketch of the scene's script. Planning of characters, scenarios, and costumes.
  4. Collection of necessary materials and creation of props and costumes.
  5. Rehearsal of the scene. Students should rehearse the scene several times to ensure they are well prepared.
  6. Presentation of the scene to the class. Each group will have 10 minutes to present their scene.

Project Delivery:

After the theater presentation, each group must prepare a written report with the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Description of the chosen ecological relationship type, justification for the choice, presentation of the scene (characters, scenario, plot), and presentation objective.
  2. Development: Discussion of the theory behind the chosen ecological relationship, detailed description of the research conducted, description of the methodology for creating the theatrical scene, and analysis of the presentation result based on class feedback.
  3. Conclusions: Reflections on the importance of the chosen ecological relationship for the ecosystem, relevance of the project for biology learning, and conclusions about teamwork and presentation.
  4. Bibliography: References of the research sources used in the project.

The theater scene presentation and the written report are complementary. While the presentation is the practical part of the activity and will allow students to explore the concepts of ecological relationships in a playful and creative way, the report is the theoretical part and will allow students to deepen their knowledge and reflect on the activity carried out.
