As should be clear by now, ecology is a discipline of great practical relevance. Understanding how organisms interact with each other and with their environment is crucial for understanding climate change, loss of biodiversity, air and water pollution, and many other environmentally significant issues. It also has direct implications for various aspects of human society, including agriculture, public health, urban planning, and even economics and politics.

Activity Title: "Ecological Monitoring and Environmental Impact Analysis"
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to create a practical and theoretical understanding of the fundamental principles and concepts of ecology and its application in the assessment and prevention of environmental impacts. Students will learn about the importance of ecological monitoring and will play the role of ecologists in a simulated scenario.
Detailed Project Description
In this project, students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be responsible for choosing a local ecosystem (for example, a park, a stream, a piece of forest, etc.) and conducting a detailed ecological study on it. They will need to explore, collect data, analyze, and predict the effects of a hypothetical intervention in the chosen ecosystem.
Students will need to study and understand the structure and function of the ecosystem in question, including biogeochemical processes, species diversity, and interactions among species and with the environment.
The main focus will be to assess and predict the possible effects of a hypothetical human intervention (for example, the establishment of an industry, the construction of a residential development, the introduction of a new species, etc.) in this ecosystem.
Activities should last a minimum of 12 hours per participating student.
Required Materials
- Field notebook for notes and drawings;
- Species identifiers (field guides, cell phone apps);
- Basic materials for sample collection (bags, jars, tweezers);
- Camera or cell phone to document the ecosystem;
- Ecological simulation software and tools for data analysis and presentation (e.g., Excel, R, Simile);

- Preliminary Study: Research and choose a local ecosystem to be the basis of your study. Evaluate the location in terms of biodiversity, food chain, habitat, and ecological niche of organisms.
- Data Collection: Make initial observations and frequent visits to the site to collect data. Document biodiversity, make notes of observations, and collect samples when necessary.
- Data Analysis: Based on the data collected, conduct an in-depth analysis, identify patterns, cycles, interactions, and energy and matter flows in the ecosystem.
- Impact Prediction: Simulate a human intervention in the ecosystem and predict the impact of this intervention on biodiversity, community structure, and ecosystem functioning.
- Report: Prepare a detailed report including all the elements discussed above: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.
- Presentation: Organize a presentation for the rest of the class, addressing the work done, the data collection and analysis process, predictions, and the impact of interventions on the ecosystem.

As a final result of the project, each group must submit a written report and present their findings and experiences to the class.
The report should include the following elements:
- Introduction: Provide context for the topic, relevance, and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.
- Development: Explain the theory behind the central themes of the project, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
- Conclusion: Summarize your main points, explain the lessons learned, and draw conclusions about the project.
- Bibliography: List the sources you relied on to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
The report writing should complement and integrate what was learned and worked on during the project.
