Reactions: Balancing

Contextualization

Balancing chemical reactions is one of the most important concepts in the study of Chemistry and plays a crucial role in a variety of scientific and industrial contexts. Essentially, balancing reactions involves determining the exact amount of reactants and products involved in a chemical reaction, so that the law of conservation of mass is satisfied. This principle dictates that the total number of atoms of each element on the reactant side of a chemical equation must be equal to the total number on the product side.

It is fascinating to realize that this concept applies to everything, from the small reactions that occur in our cells to large-scale industrial reactions that produce the materials and energy our society depends on. It is a powerful tool for predicting quantities and proportions of reactants and products in any chemical reaction.

The ability to balance chemical equations is essential for understanding the nature of these reactions and predicting their outcomes. Furthermore, it is a fundamental requirement for any professional working with chemistry, from academic researchers to laboratory technicians to chemical engineers.

In the real world, balancing chemical reactions is essential in many industrial processes where substances are transformed. Let's take, for example, the fertilizer production industry, where meticulous control of the proportions of reactants is necessary. Another example is the pharmaceutical industry, where balancing reactions is crucial in drug production. These are just two examples of a multitude of processes where understanding the balancing of reactions is of paramount importance.

This project will challenge you and your team members to explore the topic of balancing reactions in a creative and collaborative way, combining theory with practice and applying what you have learned in real-life situations.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Balancing: The Game of Chemical Reactions."

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to develop students' understanding of balancing chemical reactions through the creation of an educational board game.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be responsible for designing and producing a board game that involves the application of the principles of balancing chemical reactions. The game should be designed to be fun and educational, and should address at least four key theoretical topics or concepts related to balancing chemical reactions.

Groups will need to research and study in-depth about balancing chemical reactions and apply this knowledge in creating the game. The game should be designed to necessarily involve the concept of balancing chemical reactions, be dynamic, fun, and challenging, stimulating the assimilation of content in a playful way.

The project is expected to take around 15 hours of work per participating student to be completed.

Required Materials:

  1. Material for making the board, such as cardboard, laminated paper, etc.
  2. Material for making pieces, such as clay, EVA, etc.
  3. Colored pens, pencils, eraser.
  4. Ruler, scissors, glue.
  5. Computer with internet access for research and report elaboration.
  6. Textbooks and other relevant educational materials.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should research and study in-depth the balancing of chemical reactions. This step should include reading textbooks, online articles, watching educational videos, and any other sources that may be useful to fully understand the subject.
  3. After in-depth study, each group should conceive the idea of a board game that involves the application of the principles of balancing chemical reactions.
  4. After conceiving the idea, the next step is to create the prototype of the board game. This prototype should be created using the listed materials above.
  5. Once the prototype of the board game is ready, the next step is testing. Group members should play the game to test if it is fun, educational, and challenging.
  6. After testing, students should make any necessary changes to improve the game.
  7. Finally, the group should produce and present a detailed report on the project, addressing all aspects of game development, including research and study of balancing chemical reactions, the process of game conception and creation, the testing process, and any changes made.

Project Deliverables:

Groups must deliver the developed board game along with a detailed written report. This report should follow the format below:

  1. Introduction: The student should contextualize the theme, its relevance, and real-world application. The objective of this project and its importance should also be mentioned.
  2. Development: The student should explain in detail the theory of balancing chemical reactions, the game creation process, the game rules, how the game incorporates the concept of balancing chemical reactions, and the methodology used in the project execution. Details about the testing process and any changes made should also be included.
  3. Conclusions: The student should conclude the work by summarizing the main points, stating the learnings obtained, the conclusions drawn about the project, and how this project contributed to the understanding of the theory of balancing chemical reactions.
  4. Bibliography: The student should list all sources consulted during the project execution.

Each team member should participate in writing the report to ensure that all opinions and viewpoints are included. Students should use their project learnings to write the report, presenting and discussing their results and conclusions.
