Introduction

The study of chemistry encompasses a vast range of topics that help us understand the world around us. One such significant area is the periodic table and its grouping of elements. Non-metals, which are the focus of our project, constitute one of the groups of elements in the periodic table that play a crucial role in many natural and man-made processes.

Non-metals are chemical elements that exhibit properties opposite to those of metals, such as low electrical and thermal conductivity, lack of metallic luster, and mostly existing as gases at room temperature. Some of the most well-known elements in this group are carbon (C), oxygen (O), and nitrogen (N), which are essential for life.

The study of non-metals is fundamental as they have a wide range of applications across various fields. Furthermore, understanding the position of these elements in the periodic table, their behavior, and characteristics allows us to perceive chemistry from a broader and more comprehensive perspective.

Contextualization

The significance of non-metals is vast and extensive, ranging from the crucial role they play in the composition of our planet to the immense influence they have on our daily lives. For instance, non-metals are essential in the production of agricultural fertilizers, the chemical industry, the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, and many other industrial applications. Moreover, these elements are fundamental for the existence of life, as they are the main components of organic molecules.

Our project, therefore, extends beyond the classroom, engaging with real-world scenarios and phenomena that touch our lives. Learning about non-metals not only reinforces students' understanding of chemistry but also helps them connect this knowledge with the world around them.

Practical Activity: "Exploring the World of Non-Metals"

Project Objectives

I. To understand the properties and characteristics of non-metals and how they differ from metals. II. To identify the location of non-metals in the periodic table as well as their subgroup, the halogens. III. To comprehend the significance of non-metals in practical applications and everyday life. IV. To develop teamwork, time management, critical thinking, and scientific inquiry skills.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be assigned a set of non-metals to study from a selection made by the teacher. The groups will be responsible for conducting research and experiments to explore the properties and characteristics of these elements, their location in the periodic table, their practical applications, and their importance in everyday life.

The groups will have one month to complete the project and will be required to submit a detailed written report of their findings and conclusions, along with an oral presentation.

Materials Needed

  • Access to the internet for conducting research.
  • Textbooks and/or reference books.
  • Periodic table.
  • Materials for writing and organizing ideas (paper, pens, notebooks, presentation software, etc.).

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Provide a list of non-metals for each group to investigate. Each group should study a different set of non-metals to promote a greater diversity of topics covered in the final report.

  3. Encourage groups to research the properties of their assigned non-metals, differentiate them from metals, identify their location in the periodic table, and discover their various applications.

  4. Students should record their findings in an organized manner, forming the basis for the written report they will submit at the end.

  5. Groups should prepare an oral presentation, summarizing their findings and sharing with the rest of the class what they have learned about non-metals.

  6. Finally, each group should prepare a written report, including an Introduction, Body, Conclusion, and Bibliography.

About the Report

The report should be well-structured, presenting the students' findings in a clear and concise manner. The Introduction should contextualize the topic, discussing its relevance and real-world applications. The Body should detail the theory behind non-metals and explain the methodology used in the project, as well as present and discuss the results obtained. The Conclusion should summarize the main points discussed in the report, highlight the learning outcomes, and draw conclusions from the project. Finally, the Bibliography should list all the sources used during the making of the project.

The final report should demonstrate that students have grasped the key properties, periodic table location, and importance of non-metals in our lives, differentiating them from metals. The project and report should also evidence that students have developed important skills such as collaboration, time management, communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity.
