Periodic Table: Non-Metal

Context

The Periodic Table of Elements is an organized representation of all known chemical elements, arranged based on their physical and chemical properties. It is one of the fundamental concepts in chemistry and helps scientists understand how different elements interact with each other. Within this table, we have the nonmetals, a category of elements with characteristics quite distinct from metals.

Nonmetals are elements that do not have metallic characteristics, such as luster, high thermal and electrical conductivity, ductility, and malleability. They are usually electrical and thermal insulators and are found in nature in three physical states: solid, liquid, and gas. Additionally, nonmetals include elements vital for life as we know it, such as hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen.

This group of elements is extremely important for various industries and fields of science, with applications ranging from the production of medicines to the manufacturing of electronic components. For example, silicon, a nonmetal, is one of the most important elements for the semiconductor industry, being used in the production of chips and microprocessors.

Understanding nonmetals not only allows us to better understand the chemistry and nature around us but also how these elements are used in our daily lives and in the technology we use. Furthermore, by understanding the properties of nonmetals, we can think of solutions to current challenges, such as the search for more efficient and sustainable materials.

Practical Activity: Journey of the Nonmetals

Project Objective

The task is for groups of 3 to 5 students and aims to explore and understand the classification, properties, applications, and location of nonmetals on the Periodic Table.

Project Description

Each group must select a type of nonmetal from the Periodic Table. From this selection, the group will research and investigate this element, including its properties, uses, discovery history, and relevance in modern society. Additionally, the practical activity will encourage the construction of a three-dimensional model of the atomic structure of the chosen nonmetal.

Required Materials

  • Notebook or computer for research
  • Paper, pencil, and eraser for notes and sketches
  • Art and craft materials for the model (e.g., styrofoam balls, sticks, paint, glue, etc.)

Activity Steps

  1. Group Formation and Element Selection: Students must organize into groups of 3 to 5 members and select a nonmetal from the Periodic Table to research and model.

  2. Research: Using various resources such as books, educational websites, and videos, groups must research the selected nonmetal. They should note down its physical and chemical properties, common uses, discovery history, and relevance to society.

  3. Report Preparation: Based on the research, each group must prepare a report containing: Introduction (context and relevance of the chosen nonmetal), Development (details on properties, uses, history, and relevance), Conclusion (learnings and conclusions drawn during the project), and Bibliography (references used in the project).

  4. Model Construction: Using the art and craft materials, each group must create a three-dimensional model representing the atomic structure of the chosen nonmetal, with identification of protons, neutrons, and electrons.

  5. Project Presentation: Each group must present the report and the model to the class, discussing their findings and answering questions from classmates and the teacher.

Project Deliverables

  • Written report: Should follow the structure of a scientific report, including Introduction, Development, Conclusion, and Bibliography.
  • Three-dimensional model of the atomic structure of the chosen nonmetal.
  • Oral presentation: Should last 10-15 minutes and include a discussion of the findings and the presentation of the model.

Project Duration

The total duration of the project should be 2 to 4 hours per member, distributed during the project execution week.
