Theoretical Introduction

Components and Phases are fundamental concepts in Chemistry and form the basis for understanding various other theories and chemical reactions.

A component in Chemistry, also known as a constituent, is an individually distinct chemical species that is part of a system. For example, in a mixture of salt and water, we have two components: water and salt.

On the other hand, phase refers to a homogeneous region of a system, where physical and chemical properties are uniform. In the example we used, even after dissolving the salt in water, we have only one phase, as in the final result the properties are uniform.

Context

These concepts are of vital importance, as they are present in our daily lives, from the drinking water we consume, which is a mixture of various components, to the preparation of a simple coffee, where through filtration, we separate the solid (coffee powder) and liquid (ready-to-drink coffee) phases.

Understanding components and phases helps us to understand not only chemical processes, but also biological and geological processes. For example, in the study of groundwater, it is crucial to know the quantity and characteristics of its components (such as minerals and organic materials), as well as the phases of water (vapor, liquid, and solid).

Activity Title: "Path of Phases - A Study on Chemical Components"

Detailed Project Description

This project will consist of understanding and applying the concepts of components and phases in chemistry through practice. Students will be encouraged to visualize these concepts and learn how to differentiate them.

The groups of students, composed of 3 to 5 members, will work together to investigate, analyze, and report on a practical experiment on the separation of components and the identification of phases.

Required Materials

• Water
• Cooking oil
• Raw rice
• Food coloring (different colors)
• Transparent glasses
• Sieves of different sizes
• Coffee filter
• Basin

Detailed Step-by-Step

1. In a transparent glass, mix water, cooking oil, raw rice, and drops of food coloring of different colors. Stir this mixture.
2. Wait a few minutes and observe the "phases" that form and the "components" of this mixture.
3. Use the sieve to separate the rice from the liquid mixture and place it in a basin.
4. Then, use the coffee filter to separate the water and oil. Note that it is possible to separate the components of two phases.
5. Document the entire process, whether by writing, taking photographs, or making a video.

Project Deliverables

1. Report: Students must prepare a report on the experiment, containing: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

   • In the Introduction, explain what components and phases are in chemistry and their importance.
   • In Development, detail the experimental procedure, explaining the theory that justifies each action taken and discussing the results obtained.
   • In the Conclusion, interpret what was observed when carrying out the activity, revisit the project's objectives, and discuss what was learned from this experience.
   • In the Bibliography, list all resources (books, websites, videos, etc.) that you used to understand the topic and develop the project.

2. Presentation: Depending on the chosen format to document the experimental procedure (written, photographic, or video), students must prepare a presentation to display to the class. Remember: the quality of the experiment's documentation and explanation will be part of the evaluation.
