It is through chemistry that we can comprehend issues ranging from the composition of the foods we consume to the formation of stars in the sky. In this project, we will delve into the theme of 'Components and Phases,' a key concept for understanding mixtures.

In chemistry, a mixture is a union of two or more different substances that do not interact chemically or physically. The substances present in a mixture maintain their original properties. They can be classified into homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. Homogeneous mixtures are those in which the composition is uniform throughout their extent. Heterogeneous mixtures, on the other hand, have a composition that varies from one point to another.

Now, let's consider the phases of a mixture. A phase is a portion of a mixture that is chemically identical and is separated from other portions by clearly defined physical interfaces. In a heterogeneous mixture, we can distinguish different phases. In a homogeneous mixture, there is only one phase.

Contextualization and Practical Applications

The concept of components and phases is widely applied in various areas of our daily lives and in the industrial world. For example, in the food industry, it is necessary to separate the components of a mixture to obtain the pure ingredients needed for food production. Similarly, in the pharmaceutical industry, it is crucial to understand the phases and components for the production of safe and effective medications.

The water we drink, for instance, undergoes an extensive treatment process where different components are separated into different phases. This ensures that the liquid is safe for consumption. Petroleum, one of the main resources on our planet, is a heterogeneous mixture that needs to be refined - that is, its components need to be separated - to produce gasoline, diesel, kerosene, among others.

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to provide students with the opportunity to explore the concepts of components and phases in a practical situation. Students will engage in separating components of a heterogeneous mixture, observing and discussing the distinct phases present.

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5, and the total project completion time has been estimated at two to four hours of work per student, totaling a one-week deadline.

Detailed Project Description

The groups will create a heterogeneous mixture with common ingredients and attempt to separate them using different methods, observing how the components and phases behave. Subsequently, the group should gather to discuss what was observed and try to relate their results to the theory.

Required Materials

  1. Water
  2. Cooking oil
  3. Sand
  4. Filter paper
  5. Funnel
  6. Container for collecting the separated components

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Each group should create a heterogeneous mixture using water, cooking oil, and sand in a container.

  2. The groups should try to separate the components using the funnel and filter paper. To do this, pour the mixture onto the filter paper attached to the funnel, placing the funnel over a container to collect the filtered liquid.

  3. The groups should repeat the process until the sand is completely separated from the water and oil.

  4. After the sand, water, and oil are separated, the groups should observe the phases present, highlighting the differences and similarities.

  5. The groups should then discuss the result, trying to connect it with what they learned about components and phases.

Project Deliverables

After completing the practical part, each group should prepare a written report detailing their observations and discussions. The report should be structured as follows:

  1. Introduction: This section should contain a brief description of the concepts of components and phases, the relevance of these concepts in industry and everyday life, and the project's objective.

  2. Development: In this section, students should detail the process they carried out, describing the procedure used to create and separate the mixture. They should explain which methods were used, why they were chosen, and what the result was.
