Context

Dear students, our project will address a fundamental topic in Chemistry: Acid Nomenclature. Acids are part of our daily lives and are responsible for various chemical reactions. For example, when we taste the sourness of a lemon, we are perceiving citric acid. When we feel the sting of a cut, it is formic acid at work. In industry, the use of sulfuric acid in various processes is common.

Acid nomenclature is an important step in understanding not only basic chemistry but also in comprehending how these substances interact in our daily lives. However, this nomenclature follows well-defined rules by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), which can help us identify some properties of these substances just by their name.

Introduction

Acid nomenclature is based on the composition of the acid. Acids are compounds that have one or more hydrogen atoms (H) bonded to an anion. These anions can be simple, as in binary acids that contain only hydrogen and a negative element, or they can be polyatomic, meaning they are composed of more than one type of atom.

The first step in naming an acid is to identify whether it is binary or oxoacid. Binary acids receive the suffix "-ic", and oxoacids, when in their highest oxidation state, receive the suffix "-ic". When they are in their lowest oxidation state, they receive the suffix "-ous". Even the anion's charge can be deduced from the acid's suffix.

Knowing this is essential to correctly name acids and to understand how they react in different situations. Chemistry is an empirical science that involves the manipulation of substances, and nomenclature allows scientists to communicate accurately about the substances they are handling.

Project Objective:

  • Understand the nomenclature of acids, both binary and oxoacids.
  • Apply the nomenclature rules to correctly name acids.

Detailed Project Description:

Form groups of 3 to 5 members to carry out the activity. The task consists of creating a guide to acid nomenclature containing practical examples and a detailed explanation of the nomenclature rules. The guide should be presented to the rest of the class as a mini-lecture, which will take about 20 minutes. Each group should prepare visual materials (posters, slides, etc.) to assist in the presentation.

Required Materials:

  1. Paper and pen for drafting.
  2. Internet access for research.
  3. Materials for guide preparation (paper, colored pens, computer for slide preparation, etc.).

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Research: Start by researching and studying acid nomenclature. Use the resources suggested in the introduction of this project and seek more information from other reliable sources.

  2. Guide Preparation: With the collected information, start preparing the guide. Define a logical order to present the rules, starting with the simplest concepts and progressing to the more complex ones. Always associate the rules with practical examples to facilitate understanding.

  3. Visual Material Preparation: Prepare visual material to assist in the guide presentation. This can be a poster, a PowerPoint, or any other format that allows you to illustrate the rules and examples clearly and attractively.

  4. Presentation Preparation: Rehearse the group presentation, ensuring that all members participate and that the explanation is clear.

  5. Presentation: On the designated day, present the guide to the rest of the class. Be prepared to answer questions and discuss the topic.

Project Deliverables:

After the presentation, each group must write a document in the form of a report. This report should include:

  1. Introduction: Explain the relevance of acid nomenclature and the objective of this project.
  2. Development: Discuss the acid nomenclature theory, the methodology used to prepare and present the guide, and discuss the results and feedback received.
  3. Conclusion: Summarize the main points of the project, the lessons learned, and the conclusions drawn.
  4. Bibliography: Indicate the research sources used to carry out the project.

This report must be submitted within one week after the presentation. It will be evaluated along with the presentation to determine the final project grade.
