Periodic Table: History of the Table

Contextualization

The periodic table is one of the most recognizable symbols of science and plays a crucial role in our understanding of the universe. It is a tabular arrangement of chemical elements, organized based on their properties. The elements are ordered by increasing atomic numbers, which are determined by the number of protons an atom has.

Due to its importance, the periodic table has a rich history that carries a series of monumental scientific discoveries. From the 19th century onwards, different forms of classification of elements were proposed by various scientists, such as Johann Döbereiner with the law of triads, Alexandre-Emile Béguyer de Chancourtois with the telluric helix, and John Newlands with the law of octaves.

Understanding the history of the table is essential to grasp the evolution of science itself. It is a study of how researchers, through observation, experimentation, and analysis, managed to arrive at a more profound and structured view of the natural world.

Importance of the Theme

Despite the limitations of the early versions, the efforts of these scientists laid the foundation for the modern periodic system we use today, developed by Dmitri Mendeleev. This organized way of presenting the elements allows scientists worldwide to study and understand the properties of elements, their reactivity, and relationships among them.

In the real world, this understanding of the periodic table and its development has a considerable impact on various fields, including medicine, technology, engineering, and the environment. For example, in medicine, the understanding of the periodic table is used in the development of new drugs and treatments. In technology and engineering, the table is used to create new materials and technologies.

Practical Activity: The Path of the Periodic Table

Project Objective

  1. Understand the historical development of the periodic table.
  2. Analyze and discuss the different theories proposed for the classification of elements.
  3. Establish connections between various historical events and advances in science.
  4. Prepare a collaborative presentation and report on the study conducted.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be responsible for studying, analyzing, and presenting a part of the history of the periodic table.

  1. Group 1: Pre-periodic table and Döbereiner's Triads
  2. Group 2: Newlands' law of octaves
  3. Group 3: Chancourtois' telluric helix
  4. Group 4: Mendeleev's first periodic table
  5. Group 5: The modern periodic table

Each group should research their respective part, analyze and discuss the existing theories during the period, and understand how these theories influenced the construction of the periodic table as we know it today.

Required Materials

  1. History books on chemistry and the periodic table
  2. Internet for complementary research
  3. Presentation materials (slides, posters, etc.)
  4. Writing materials for the report

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Divide students into groups and assign topics.
  2. Each group starts researching their respective topic using the recommended sources and other credible sources. Important: students should take notes of the consulted sources for use in the report bibliography.
  3. After the research, groups should discuss and analyze the information obtained, understand the historical context, the proposed theories, and how these theories contributed to the evolution of the periodic table.
  4. After the discussion, each group should prepare a 20-minute presentation summarizing their findings. The presentation should include information about the historical period, the main proposed theories, the limitations of these theories, and how they contributed to the current periodic table.
  5. Each group should also prepare a written report containing the following parts: introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography. The report should be detailed, reflect the group's learning process, and present the group's conclusions based on their research and discussion.

Project Deliverables

  1. Presentation: Each group will give a presentation on their respective topic. The presentation should be clear, informative, and engaging, demonstrating the group's understanding of the topic.
  2. Written Report: Each group must submit a detailed written report of the project. The report should include the following topics:
    • Introduction: the group should present the theme of their research, its relevance, and the project's objective.
    • Development: the group should explain the theory behind the central theme of their project, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: the group should conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the lessons learned, and drawing conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: the group should indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

Each group has autonomy to organize tasks internally, aiming to develop teamwork, time management, and effective communication skills. The teacher will be available to guide and support the groups during the project development.
