Theoretical Introduction
The study of Geography is a fantastic way to understand the world around us, especially the climatic factors, which are the environmental conditions that, combined, determine the climate of a region. These factors are: latitude, altitude, continentality, maritimity, air masses, ocean currents, vegetation, relief orientation, and human action.
Latitude refers to the location of a place in relation to the equator. The closer to the equator, the warmer the climate will be, and the farther away, the colder. Altitude also affects the climate, as the higher a location, the lower the temperature. Continentality and Maritimity refer to the influence of oceans and continents on the climate. Places close to the sea tend to have a more balanced climate, while in the interior of continents, the difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures can be quite pronounced.
The other factors, such as air masses, ocean currents, vegetation, relief orientation, and human action, play significant roles in determining the climate and are aspects that we will explore in detail throughout this project.
Contextualization
Climatic factors are extremely relevant to our daily lives. They influence everything from the clothes we choose to wear to the food we consume, through our health and the leisure events we can enjoy. Moreover, they have a major impact on local and global economies, as they affect agricultural, fishing, energy, tourism sectors, and many others.
Understanding climatic factors is also essential to comprehend and address broader environmental issues, such as climate change and sustainability. As we recognize the role that human action plays in changing climates, it becomes increasingly important to understand the factors that influence the global climate and how we can mitigate the negative impacts of our actions.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: "Climate Model: Understanding Climate Factors"
Project Objective
The objective of this project is for students to develop, in groups of 3 to 5 students, a three-dimensional model that represents the different climatic factors that influence the climate of a region. This activity will help them understand how each of these factors acts and connects to form the climate as we know it.
Detailed Project Description
In this activity, each group should choose a region of the world (which can be a country, a region within a country, an island, etc.) and research the climate of that location. After understanding the factors that influence the climate of this region, students will create a model that represents these factors and how they interact to create the climate that the region has.
Additionally, each group will be responsible for an oral presentation, in which they will explain their work, detailing their findings on the climatic factors that influence the climate of the chosen region and how this information was represented in the model.
Required Materials
- Materials for creating the model (paper, cardboard, glue, scissors, paints, etc.)
- Computer or other device with internet access for research
- Camera to take photos of the model
Detailed Step-by-Step

Group Organization and Region Selection: Form groups of 3 to 5 students and choose a region of the world to study the climatic factors.

Research on Climatic Factors: Research the main climatic factors that influence the climate of the chosen region. Use the resources suggested in the introduction of this project, and do not hesitate to seek more sources of information.

Model Planning: Sketch on paper how the model will represent each of the climatic factors. Be creative!

Model Creation: Based on the planning, build the model using the available materials. Remember to take photos of the construction process!

Preparation of Oral Presentation: Prepare an oral presentation to explain to others what the climatic factors in the chosen region are and how they were represented in the model.

Writing the Written Document: Finally, write a project report following the structure indicated earlier (Introduction, Development, Conclusion, Bibliography). Do not forget to include photos of the model and the construction process!
Project Deliverables
Each group of students must deliver:

The model: Representing the climatic factors of the chosen region. Photos of the model should be included in the report.

Oral Presentation: Description of the climatic factors represented in the model and of the chosen region.

Written Report: Should have as an introduction the project theme, the relevance of climatic factors, and the region choice. In the development section, students must describe and discuss the climatic factors of the chosen region, explain how they were represented in the model, detail the model creation process and the methodology used. In the conclusion, students should summarize the main points of their work, reflect on what they learned, and what conclusions they reached. The report should include the bibliography used during the research and photos of the model and the construction process.
This project will connect theory (through research and report writing) with practice (through model creation) and promote collaboration and communication among students (during group project development and oral presentation).
