Geomorphology: Endogenous and Exogenous Agents

Contextualization

Geomorphology is a branch of Geography that deals with the study of the forms and processes that shape the Earth's surface. The Earth, as a planet that is constantly changing, is molded by endogenous and exogenous agents, which are respectively internal and external forces that act on the relief.

Endogenous agents, or internal ones, are associated with movements within the Earth, among them, we can mention earthquakes, volcanism, and tectonics. On the other hand, exogenous agents, or external ones, are related to phenomena that occur on the Earth's surface, such as the action of wind, water (rain, snow, ice, rivers, oceans), and living beings.

Endogenous and exogenous agents work together to create the Earth's relief that we see today. Mountains, valleys, plains, and depressions are all results of long periods of activity of these agents.

Understanding how these agents act and shape the Earth's surface is fundamental in various areas, such as in construction, agriculture, urban planning, architecture, among others. Furthermore, it is relevant to understand how human action, by interfering in these processes, can cause environmental imbalances.

As a society, we have challenged these agents and interfered in their natural processes. Urbanization and agriculture, for example, alter water flow, an exogenous agent, which can cause erosions and floods. Understanding these dynamics helps to mitigate negative impacts and create sustainable solutions for land use and occupation.

  1. The book "Geografia Geral e do Brasil", which has a chapter dedicated to geomorphology and endogenous and exogenous agents.
  2. The portal "Brasil Escola" has several articles on the subject, as well as maps and exercises to reinforce the content.

Practical Activity: Modeling the Earth

Activity Title:

The Journey of Geomorphic Agents

Project Objective:

Conduct an in-depth research on exogenous and endogenous agents and their actions on the relief. From simulating the actions of these agents to producing a scientific report and an oral presentation about their findings, including the development of a physical model of the relief.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be responsible for studying one of the exogenous agents (rain, wind, rivers, tides, ice) and one of the endogenous agents (earthquakes, volcanism, tectonics).

Each group must:

  1. Research and study how these agents work in shaping landscapes and what their main characteristics are.

  2. Simulate these agents in a model representing the Earth's surface, documenting the process step by step.

  3. Produce a detailed scientific report on the research process.

  4. Prepare an oral presentation to share their findings with the class.

Required Materials:

For the project, the following materials will be needed:

  1. Materials for building the model (clay, paper mache, paint, glue, etc).
  2. Internet access for research.
  3. Writing materials for report writing.

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Research: Each group should research the assigned endogenous and exogenous agents and how they act on the Earth's relief. Record your findings, sources, and initial assumptions, which will be checked in practice later.

  2. Model Planning: Based on the research, students should plan and sketch how they will represent the agents' actions in the model. The sketch should visibly show the elements to be represented and how the agents will act on them.

  3. Model Construction: Here, students bring their sketch to life, modeling the environment with clay and other available materials. Throughout the process, document the construction steps.

  4. Agent Simulation: Once the model is ready, students must simulate the agents' action on the relief, recording the changes and effects observed.

  5. Report: Considering the results obtained, a report must be prepared containing the following topics: introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography. The introduction should contextualize the theme; the development should present the theory, explain the activity, the methodology used, and present the results; the conclusions should summarize the main points, learnings, and conclusions about the project; and the bibliography should indicate the sources used.

  6. Presentation: Finally, students prepare an oral presentation about their findings. The presentation allows the class to share their learnings, which also fosters a collaborative learning environment.

Project Deliverables:

  1. Model: The model should represent a terrestrial environment and demonstrate the action of endogenous and exogenous agents.

  2. Scientific Report: The report will document the research process, from initial research to final findings, including the observed changes in the model.

  3. Oral Presentation: The oral presentation should be a synthesis of the report and the experience. It should be dynamic, involve all group members, and stimulate dialogue with the class.

At the end of this project, students will have a deeper knowledge of how endogenous and exogenous agents work to shape the Earth's relief. Additionally, they will learn to work in teams, manage their time, and enhance their communication and problemsolving skills.
