Cartography is a fundamental science that permeates many aspects of our lives, although we may not realize it. It is the practice of creating maps to represent the Earth. Cartography is not just about geography, it is about understanding the world around us. We use maps daily, whether in the car's GPS or in weather forecasts. Therefore, understanding how to interpret and create maps is a crucial skill. This project will address three key components of cartography: scale, projection, and geotechnology.

Scale is a fundamental concept in cartography that determines the relationship between a distance on Earth and the same distance represented on the map. Cartographic projection is the technique used to represent the Earth's sphere, which is three-dimensional, on a two-dimensional plane, such as a map or a sheet of paper. There are several different forms of projections, each with its advantages and disadvantages, which affect how things are represented on a map. Geotechnology refers to the use of technology to collect, store, process, and present geographic information.

Introduction

The advent of the digital age has changed the way we view and use maps. With geotechnology, we now have access to more geographic information than ever before. Geographic information systems, GPS, and even Google Maps are examples of how technology has facilitated our interaction with geographic information.

Scale and projection, although they may seem like simple concepts, have profound implications on how we view the world. Scale is crucial for understanding the relationship between distance in the real world and how it is represented on the map. Projection is essential when trying to represent a three-dimensional world on a two-dimensional plane, such as a map. Different types of projections can distort different aspects of the world, such as shape, area, distance, or direction. Therefore, choosing the right projection for the right job is an important aspect of cartography.

'Mapping Our World: Understanding Scale, Projection, and Geotechnology'

Project Objective

Through the development of the project, students should understand the importance of scale and projection in cartography, as well as the relevance of geotechnology. The final project should demonstrate the application of these concepts in practice.

Detailed Project Description

Students, grouped in 3 to 5, should choose a location to map. The chosen location can be the neighborhood itself, the city, a national park, a state, or even the entire country.

After choosing the location, the group should research and collect geographic data and then create two different maps: one using a large scale (i.e., with less detail, like 1:100,000) and another using a small scale (with more detail, like 1:1,000).

The maps should be created in two different projections, chosen by the students, allowing them to see how different projections can alter the appearance of the maps.

After creating the maps, students should apply geotechnology, for example, using a Geographic Information System (GIS) software to overlay demographic, economic, or land use information on the map.

Required Materials

  • Computers with internet access.
  • Geographic Information System (GIS) software – a free option is QGIS.
  • Geographic data from the study area. These can be obtained from public agencies, universities, IBGE, among others.

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Group Formation and Definition of the Study Area: In groups of 3 to 5 students, choose a study area to map. Define the scales and projections you will use.

  2. Research and Collection of Geographic Data: Research and collect geographic data from the chosen area. Depending on the choice, these data can be of different types, such as demographics, economic conditions, land use, etc.

  3. Creation of Maps: Using GIS software, create two maps of the chosen area in two different scales and with two different projections.

  4. Application of Geotechnology: Finally, apply the collected information, such as demographic, economic, or land use indicators, on the created maps.

Project Delivery and Document Formatting

The final work should present the two created maps and the written report, which should contain:

  1. Introduction: Describe the chosen study area, the importance of Cartography, its relevance, and the motivations for choosing this location.

  2. Development: Describe the concepts of scale, projection, and geotechnology and how they were applied in the project. Present the created maps and discuss the differences observed between the two scales and projections. Analyze the information applied on the maps through geotechnology.

  3. Conclusion: Revisit the project's objectives, comment on the main learnings, and discuss how the choice of scale and projection can influence the interpretation of data.

  4. Bibliography: List all sources used for the work, such as books, websites, videos, etc.

Remember, the project's goal is not only to assess students' knowledge of Cartography but also to evaluate their ability to work in a team, manage time, and solve problems.
