Contextualization
The beginning of the 20th century brought profound changes to the industry and, consequently, to work and the economy on a global scale. Two main figures emerge from this period and deeply shape our understanding of efficiency in production: Frederick Winslow Taylor and Henry Ford.
Taylorism, also known as 'scientific management,' was one of the first attempts to apply a studied scientific system to the work process in order to improve efficiency. Taylor believed that by breaking tasks into smaller parts and studying how these tasks were performed, he could find the most efficient and fastest way to complete them.
Fordism, named after Henry Ford and his famous assembly line, is in turn an evolution of Taylorism. Ford sought to perfect mass production by introducing innovations such as the moving assembly line and product standardization, which allowed for faster and cheaper production.
The relevance of these events to today's world is undeniable. Management policies, industrial production, and even work organization in many areas are still heavily influenced by the principles of Taylorism and Fordism. Although some of the specific techniques and strategies have changed over time, the underlying ideology of maximizing efficiency is still very present.
However, while they have brought huge economic benefits and greatly increased production, these systems also have their drawbacks. They are often criticized for turning workers into mere cogs in a machine, depersonalizing the work process and giving little consideration to the well-being of workers.

Practical Activity: Production Line Simulation
Project Objective
Students will simulate a production line based on the principles of Taylorism and Fordism. Through this activity, students will be able to contrast, compare, and criticize the principles and strategies of both production systems.
Project Description
Students will work in groups of three to five people, with each group being responsible for simulating a production line that produces a simplified final product, such as a paper airplane or an origami. Each group will simulate production using the techniques and principles of Taylorism and Fordism, for a total of two rounds.
During the first round, groups will implement the principles of Taylorism, such as task division and task standardization. During the second round, they will implement the principles of Fordism, such as the mobile production line and mass production.
Required Materials
- Sheets of paper
- Stopwatch
- Markers to record the time and number of products produced
- Camera or smartphone to document the process
Step by Step
- Formation of groups and designation of a leader for each group who will coordinate tasks and record results.
- Group leaders will divide tasks among group members according to the principles of Taylorism.
- Using the stopwatch, each group must record the time it takes to produce 10 products.
- Groups must document the entire process through photos or short videos.
- Groups then reorganize their production lines according to the principles of Fordism and repeat steps 3 and 4.
- Finally, each group should discuss and compare the two experiences and record any notable differences in terms of efficiency, labor relations, and other factors.
Project Deliverables
Each group will be evaluated based on:
- Their performance during the practical activity, including the efficiency of their production lines and their ability to effectively implement the principles of Taylorism and Fordism.
- A written report in the specified format. The report should include a detailed introduction with the contextualization of the theme, a development that explains the methodology adopted and discusses the results obtained, a conclusion with the main conclusions and learnings obtained in the project, and finally, a bibliography with the sources and references used for the project.
