What is History?

History is the study of humanity - its actions in the world, social, political, cultural, and economic transformations over the centuries. But what drives these changes? Are they isolated events or are there patterns we can identify? These are the questions that a historian tries to answer.

In history, we deal with a complex intertwining of human actions, events, and ideas that shape the world as we know it. We study the past not only out of a love for knowledge, but to understand the present and influence the future. Thus, History is not just an academic discipline, but a bridge between the past, present, and future.

And then we come to the concept of 'historical time.' This is a fundamental concept that allows the study of events in chronological sequence, although it is not limited to that. Historical time also takes into account different rhythms in cultural, economic, or political events. It is a way to observe, understand, and analyze the passage of time and its implications on historical events.

Importance of History

History is essential for us to understand who we are, where we come from, and where we are going. It helps us understand the complex world we live in, revealing how the events, ideas, and actions of the past have shaped the present.

Furthermore, the study of History allows us to develop valuable skills, such as critical thinking, analysis of events and ideas, and understanding the human impact on society and the world in general. History also gives us the opportunity to learn from the mistakes and successes of the past, so we can make better decisions in the present and future.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Historical Web: Connecting the Dots in Time'

Project Objective:

The objective of the project is to deepen students' understanding of the concept of historical time and the influence of human actions, events, and ideas in shaping History. Students will apply research techniques, source analysis, identification of patterns and connections between events, and reflection on the relevance of historical events for understanding the present.

Detailed Project Description:

This project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and will last for one month. Each group will select a specific historical period (for example, Renaissance, Industrial Revolution, Independence of Brazil, etc.) and will conduct an investigation to identify the most influential events, figures, and ideas that occurred during that period. The research must be based on reliable sources and cover a wide range of facets in this historical period, including social, cultural, political, and economic aspects.

The final product of the project will be a 'Historical Web,' which is a visual diagram illustrating the connections between the different researched events, figures, and ideas. This diagram should be accompanied by a written report that explains the identified connections and discusses their implications for understanding the historical period in question and its impact on the present.

Required Materials:

• History Books, Articles, Reliable Websites for research
• Diagramming Software (e.g., Microsoft PowerPoint, Canva, etc.)
• Material for writing the report (e.g., Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc.)

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity:

1. Group Formation and Selection of Historical Period (2 hours): each group must choose a historical period that is of common interest among its members.

2. Preliminary Research (4 hours): each group must search for information about the selected period, identifying the main events, figures, and ideas that were significant. This includes reading textbooks, online research, consulting books, articles, documentaries, among others.

3. Identification of Connections (3 hours): based on the collected information, students must work together to identify connections between the different researched aspects. How do these events, figures, and ideas interconnect? How did one affect or influence the other?

4. Construction of the Historical Web (3 hours): the group must create a visual diagram showing the identified connections. The diagram should be clear and easy to understand, with each event, figure, or idea clearly labeled.

5. Writing the Report (8 hours): the group must write a detailed report explaining the identified connections in the Historical Web. The report should include the Introduction (with the context and purpose of the research), Development (with a detailed description of the identified connections and the evidence that supports them), Conclusion (with the learnings and reflections on the importance of these connections for understanding the studied historical period and its impact on the present), and Bibliography (with a list of all the research sources used).

6. Review and Finalization (3 hours): students must review the Historical Web and the report, checking for clarity, accuracy of information, quality of sources used, and correct formatting of the report. After the review, students must finalize and submit the Historical Web and the Report.

Project Submission The project submission consists of two main items, the Historical Web (visual diagram) and the Written Report.

Historical Web: it must be clear, with good resolution, and all events, figures, and ideas must be properly indicated and connected showing the interrelation between them.

Written Report: it must be well-structured, with clear and precise language, without grammatical errors, and with correct observation of citation rules according to ABNT standards. The report should detail the research conducted by the group, the identified connections, and should justify the relevance of the chosen events, figures, and ideas. It should also highlight how the learnings acquired from the project connect with current life and how they can be applied in society.
