Ancient Rome, founded in 753 BC, became one of the greatest empires in history. The Roman Empire, as it is known, was characterized by its grand territorial expansion, political, military, and social structures, as well as a rich cultural and technological legacy. Therefore, understanding Ancient Rome and the Roman Empire is essential to comprehend the formation and evolution of Western culture.

Roman society transitioned from the kingdom to the republic and, subsequently, to the empire, undergoing several transformations throughout this process. Each of these phases offers a range of topics for our exploration: the impact of these political structures on people's lives, power dynamics, empire expansion and management, military challenges, and cultural interaction with the conquered peoples.

Introduction

In this project, we will delve into the history of the Roman Empire and its influence on our current lives. We will understand the political, social, economic, and military aspects of Ancient Rome, and how its ideas and institutions shaped the Western world. We will study the empire's expansion, technologies used, military strategies, system of government, social structures, and, finally, the historical legacies that endure to this day.

Thus, the project aims not only to teach about the history of the Roman Empire but also to develop skills such as research, critical analysis, teamwork, and communication. The study of history is an opportunity to understand our present and, more importantly, to reflect on our future.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Recreating Rome: Conquering Territory and Maintaining Peace"

Project Objective:

Through the creation and management of a fictional version of the Roman Empire, students will be able to explore the complexity of political, economic, social, and military interactions at its peak. The final product will be a multimedia presentation and a detailed report describing how they faced the challenges of governing an extensive empire.

Detailed Project Description:

Divided into groups of 3 to 5 students, participants will "build" and manage their own Roman Empire, negotiating territorial expansion, domestic management, and foreign relations. Each group will be responsible for creating a physical map of their empire, recording the management decisions made, and reporting the consequences of those decisions.

First, students must research the political and social structure of the Roman Empire, as well as the main governed territories. Based on this, they must outline a plan for the expansion of their fictional empire.

Next, they must consider the challenges of internal governance: How will they allocate resources? How will they deal with the cultural diversity of the conquered peoples? How will they ensure cooperation and peace? How will they deal with possible uprisings or rebellions?

Finally, students must consider foreign relations: How will they deal with other groups (or Empires)? How will they avoid or handle conflicts? How will they protect themselves from potential threats?

Throughout the project, the group must meet regularly (online or in person) to discuss and make decisions on these issues. Each decision must be documented and justified, providing a detailed record of the learning process.

Required Materials:

• Stationery materials for creating the physical map: large paper, markers, colored pencils, etc.
• Research resources, such as books, documents, reliable websites, and videos about the Roman Empire.
• Device for recording videos or multimedia presentations.
• Video editing or presentation tools, such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, Adobe Premiere, etc.

Detailed Step-by-Step:

1. Research: Each group must start by researching the Roman Empire, its political and social structure, its territories, and the challenges of managing such a diverse and extensive empire. This research serves as the basis for creating their own empire.

2. Map Creation: Based on the research, students must create a map of how they imagine their empire will expand. This map should be colorful and detailed, showing different regions, significant cities, and important routes.

3. Administration Management: Next, students must start "governing" the empire. They must document all decisions made, including the justification for each one and the predicted consequences.

4. Foreign Relations: They must also simulate relations with other empires, which will be represented by the other groups in the class. Interactions and decisions must be documented.

5. Final Presentation and Report: Each group must prepare a multimedia presentation (can be a video or a slide presentation) summarizing the history of their empire, the decisions made, and the results. They must also prepare a detailed written report, structured in the following sections: introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography used.

Project Deliverables:

The final product of this project will be a multimedia presentation and a written report. The presentation should include a brief overview of the empire, including an explanation of the created map, and a summary of the main decisions made by the group. The written report, on the other hand, should be more detailed, highlighting the understanding gained about the Roman Empire and the application of this understanding in the management of the fictional empire.

In particular, the report should include:

• Introduction: Brief contextualization of the project, including the justification for the chosen format and the relevance of studying the Roman Empire for the current world.
• Development: Detailed description of the research process and decision-making, including justifications for each decision and predicted consequences.
• Conclusions: Summary of the main learnings obtained throughout the project and reflection on how the management of the fictional empire illustrated the complexities of managing the Roman Empire.
• Bibliography: List of all sources used for research and learning, including books, websites, videos, among others.
