Spanish colonization in America was a fundamental period in history that significantly shaped the demography, culture, and political institutions of the continent. The Spanish expansion, initiated in the late 15th century with Christopher Columbus' voyage in 1492, marked the beginning of a colonization process that lasted over 300 years. During this time, the Spanish established complex structures of domination over indigenous populations, intensely exploited natural resources, and imposed Catholicism as the main religion.

Studying Spanish colonization in America is essential to understand the development of Latin American countries. By exploring this theme, students can better grasp various aspects such as the encounter and interaction between different cultures, violent power struggles, socio-economic issues, the roots of Catholicism in the region, and many other aspects whose repercussions can still be felt today.

In-depth study of this period provides indispensable knowledge for a global understanding of contemporary world history. This analysis allows students to comprehend the complex power relations and ideological influence, mainly through religion, in the historical development of societies and the formation of Latin American identity. Furthermore, it is an opportunity to critically analyze the issue of violence and exploitation, both in the colonial past and its implications in the present.

Introduction

This project aims to explore Spanish colonization in America through four thematic axes: the discovery of America and the arrival of the Spanish, economic exploitation and colonial institutions, indigenous resistance and colonial revolts, and the lasting legacy in Latin American societies. Each group of students will be responsible for researching one of these topics, interpreting and analyzing relevant primary and secondary sources.

The completion of this project requires intense collaborative work, encouraging the development of historical research skills, source analysis, critical thinking, and argumentation. Moreover, the project is implemented in an interdisciplinary manner, as it includes concepts from Geography, to understand the location and influence of the environment on Spanish colonization, and Portuguese Language, in the final textual production of the report.

Project Objective:

Detailed Project Description:

Each group will be responsible for one of the four topics mentioned above and must conduct thorough research, using primary and secondary sources, to understand and explain the key elements that define their topic. Through this project, students will delve into the period of Spanish colonization, identifying and analyzing the most important elements of each topic.

Required Materials:

1. Books, articles, and online sources for research.
2. Writing materials or computers for report elaboration.
3. Art materials (optional), in case the group wants to include illustrations, maps, or other visual elements in their report.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

1. Initial Research (3 hours): Initially, each group should conduct broad and initial research on their chosen topic. The goal here is to gain a general understanding of the subject before delving into more specific aspects.

2. Planning Meeting (1 hour): Next, each group should hold a meeting to discuss the initial findings and plan the task division and schedule for the next stage of research.

3. In-Depth Research (5 hours): Each group member should now conduct a more detailed investigation on sub-themes of the group's topic. The aim is to obtain more detailed and specific information.

4. Information Compilation (2 hours): After in-depth research, groups should meet again to share and consolidate the acquired information.

5. Report Drafting (4 hours): Each group should then start drafting the report, organizing the information logically and coherently.

6. Report Review and Finalization (2 hours): Groups should then review their reports, correcting any errors, improving the structure and flow of the text, and ensuring that all necessary information is included.

7. Presentation Preparation (3 hours): After finalizing the report, groups should begin preparing an oral presentation of their work for the class.

The total estimated workload for the project is approximately 20 hours per student.

Project Deliverables

The deliverables of this project consist of a research report and an oral presentation.

The report should follow the following structure:

1. Introduction: should contain a contextualization of the topic's importance and the project's objectives.
2. Development: should detail the theory behind the topic, explanation of the activities carried out, methodology used, and results obtained.
3. Conclusion: should recap the most important points, the learnings acquired, and the conclusions about the project.
4. Bibliography: should list all sources used for the project.
