Context

Introduction

A Sequence in mathematics is a set of numbers in a specific order. Each number in the sequence is called a term. The main particularity of sequences is that the position of each term is relevant to its value. There are different types of sequences, such as arithmetic, geometric, and recursive.

Arithmetic sequences are those in which the difference between a term and the previous one is constant. Geometric sequences, on the other hand, are those in which the ratio between a term and the previous one is constant. Recursive sequences are defined using the sequence's own terms.

Each sequence has a formula called the general term, which allows us to calculate any term of that sequence without even knowing the previous terms. Knowing how to identify the type of sequence and apply the general term correctly is a fundamental concept for understanding many more advanced mathematical concepts.

Relevance of Sequences in the Real World

Sequences play a significant role in our daily lives and in various areas of science. Whether in economic predictions, the study of population growth, financial mathematics, game theory, or simply in how we organize and understand sequences of events in our daily lives.

For example, the Fibonacci sequence, which is a recursive sequence, has been found in various areas of nature, from the arrangement of leaves on a tree to the proportion of spirals in a snail. Mathematicians and scientists have used the Fibonacci sequence to explore and understand the world around us.

Furthermore, sequences are also very present in other environments, such as in music, where they can define chords and rhythms, and in cinema, where the sequence of images creates the illusion of movement.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Discovering the Mathematics Behind Sequences"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to identify and classify different types of sequences, calculate the general term of each one, and explore their real-world uses.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will be tasked with identifying sequences in real-life situations, classifying them, and calculating the general term. They should also explore how these sequences appear in everyday situations or in the sciences.

Required Materials

  • Paper and pencil for notes.
  • Computer with internet access for research.
  • Camera (can be a smartphone) to document the sequences found, if necessary.

Step-by-Step Activity Execution

Step 1: Initial group discussion about the concept of sequences, different types of sequences, and their general term. At this stage, students should review the suggested study materials.

Step 2: Each group should choose three different environments (for example, home, nature, and school) and look for examples of sequences in these environments. They should take notes or photographs of these sequences.

Step 3: Back in the classroom, each group should classify the sequences they found. They should identify whether the sequence is arithmetic, geometric, or recursive and calculate the general term of each one.

Step 4: Finally, each group should research how the sequences they found are used in real-world applications. They should give a presentation to the class, showing their findings.

Project Deliverables

Groups must deliver:

  1. Written report:

    • Introduction: Description of the concept of sequences, the relevance and application in the real world, and the objective of this project.

    • Development: Detailed description of the theory of sequences and the general term, detailed explanation of the activities carried out, methodology used, and presentation and discussion of the results obtained.

    • Conclusion: Recap of the main points, explanation of the learnings obtained, and conclusions drawn from the project.

    • Bibliography: Indication of the sources used for the project development.

  2. Oral presentation, talking about the sequences found, their classification, general term, and real-world applications.

The project should be developed over a week, with an estimated 2 to 4 hours of work for each student. The written report complements the practical activity, meaning that students must document the project in detail, explaining each step they took, the results they obtained, and how this helped them understand the concept of sequences.
