The word 'logarithm' is derived from Greek and means 'proportion number'. The notion of logarithm allows us to deal with very large or very small numbers more efficiently, making them more manageable and applicable. For example, one of the most common applications of logarithms is in scientific notation, which is used to express the magnitude of extreme natural phenomena, such as the size of galaxies or the mass of protons.

Logarithms are also fundamental in solving exponential equations, which are common in fields like physics, engineering, economics, and computer science. For example, in telecommunications engineering, logarithms are used to measure signal intensity, and in computer science, they are used to calculate algorithm complexity.

Contextualization

In our daily lives, logarithms have a number of applications, some of which may surprise us. The Richter scale, used to measure the intensity of earthquakes, is based on logarithms. Decibels, used to measure sound intensity, are also calculated using logarithms.

In finance, logarithms are used to calculate compound interest, a concept that directly impacts our lives when we take out a bank loan or when we invest money. In the field of medicine, logarithms are used to calculate pH, a measure of acidity or alkalinity that is crucial for many biological processes.

Therefore, gaining a solid understanding of logarithms and how to calculate them is extremely beneficial, both for our future studies and for our understanding of the world around us.

Project Objective: The activity aims to explore the concept and applications of logarithms through a practical, engaging, and interactive journey.

Detailed Project Description: Each group will be responsible for investigating, analyzing, discussing, and presenting an aspect of the application of logarithms in the real world. Each group can choose an application in fields such as music (decibels), seismology (Richter scale), finance (compound interest), chemistry (pH), among others. The goal is to understand the importance of logarithms, apply the concepts learned in the classroom in practical situations, and develop research, communication, and teamwork skills.

Materials Needed: Computer with internet access, books, notebook for notes, pens, presentation software (such as PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc), scientific calculator.

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity:

  1. Group Formation: Form groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Topic Selection: Each group should choose a field of application of logarithms for their investigation. Topics may include sound (decibels), earthquakes (Richter scale), finance (compound interest), chemistry (pH), among others.

It is recommended to seek reliable and varied sources to obtain a more complete and accurate understanding.

    • Introduction: At the beginning of the report, students should introduce the chosen topic, its importance and real-world application, and the project's objective.

    • Development: Here, students should explain the concept of logarithms and why it is used in their chosen area. They should describe in detail the problem created and how it was solved, including the methodology used and the calculations performed. The steps should be clearly explained and justified.

    • Bibliography: Finally, students should indicate all sources used for research, including books, websites, articles, videos, among others.
