Contextualization

Mathematical operations are one of the essential bases for understanding the world around us. In particular, multiplication and division are fundamental operations that assist in solving various everyday problems and challenges in the exact sciences.

Introduction

The multiplication operation is fundamental because it is a quick and practical way to add equal numbers. Multiplication involves two numbers: the multiplicand and the multiplier. The result of multiplication is called the product. In general, multiplication is used in various everyday situations, such as calculating areas, volumes, counting, and others.

Division is a form of total equitable distribution, that is, dividing a number into equal parts. It is an inverse operation of multiplication. Dividing involves three terms: the dividend, the divisor, and the quotient. In addition, in some situations, division can generate a remainder. Division is a basic tool for solving problems of reason, proportion, fraction, percentage, and others.

Contextualization and Importance

In the real world, multiplication and division are present in various situations. For example, when we need to calculate the quantity of ingredients for a recipe based on the number of people who will eat, we use multiplication. In the same way, when we need to divide the bill of a restaurant among friends, we use division.

The understanding of these mathematical operations is essential not only for solving simple everyday problems but also as a basis for learning more complex concepts in Mathematics and in other disciplines of the exact sciences.

Practical Activity: "MatShop: Trading in Numbers"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to apply the concepts of multiplication and division in practice, through the simulation of a sales business. The students will create a mini-enterprise, where they must plan the quantity of products necessary for sale, calculate costs and profits, and divide the profit fairly among all the members of the team.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, the students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group must think of a fictitious product to be marketed in the "MatShop", which does not need to be a real product, but can be quantified.

The groups will need to calculate based on a fictitious budget provided by the teacher, how many products can be "purchased" for resale (using multiplication), calculate the sale value of the products (using multiplication), and finally, divide the profit among the members of the group (using division).

Necessary Materials

  • Paper and pen for notes.
  • Calculator (optional).
  • Computer with internet access for research and preparation of the final report.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Project

  1. Formation of groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Choice of the product to be marketed.
  3. Calculation of the quantity of products to be "purchased" with the budget provided by the teacher.
  4. Calculation of the sale price of the products.
  5. Calculation of the expected profit from the sale of the products.
  6. Division of profit among the members of the group.
  7. Preparation of a detailed report of the project.

Each group must then prepare a detailed report divided into four main parts:

I. Introduction: It must contextualize the project, talk about the importance of multiplication and division in real-world situations, and describe the objective and scope of the project.

II. Development: It must first explain the theory behind multiplication and division. Then, describe the choice of the product, the calculation strategy, and the decisions made during the project. Finally, it should present and discuss the results obtained.

III. Conclusion: It must restate the main points of the project, describe the experiences acquired, and conclusions drawn about the application of the concepts of multiplication and division.

IV. Bibliography: It must indicate the reference sources that the group used for the development of the project.

Project Deliverables

Students must deliver:

  1. The detailed calculation of the quantity of products "purchased," sale price, and profit division.
  2. The final report, containing the four parts described above, written in a clear and cohesive manner, connecting the theory of multiplication and division with the practice carried out in the project.

At the end of the project, the students will have used multiplication and division in a practical way and related these basic operations with everyday situations, also developing skills such as teamwork, time management, communication, and problem solving.
