Introduction

Sequences in mathematics are ordered sets of numbers that follow certain predefined rules or patterns. There are various types of sequences, such as arithmetic and geometric sequences, which are the most basic and widely used. However, sequences can follow any rule, as long as there is consistency and we can predict the next terms based on the existing terms.

By learning about sequences, you will not only enhance your logical reasoning and problem-solving skills, but also be prepared to deal with more advanced mathematical concepts. In Calculus, for example, the concept of limit, essential for understanding derivatives and integrals, is directly linked to the idea of infinite sequences.

The use of sequences is essential in many branches of science. In physics and engineering, for instance, sequences are used to model and predict system behaviors. In computer science, sequences are used in algorithms and codes.

Contextualization

Sequences are extremely relevant in the real world and are present in ways that we may not always perceive. For example, when thinking about compound interest, we are dealing with a geometric sequence; in repetitive and periodic movements (such as the swing of a pendulum or the rotation of planets), we are dealing with sequences.

Moreover, sequences are present in our daily lives. Suppose you are saving money and every month you manage to save a fixed amount. This generates an arithmetic sequence! Or imagine you have a music box that plays a certain sequence of notes repeatedly, that is also a sequence!

Title: Sequencing Music and Saving Time

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with the opportunity to recognize, understand, and apply the concepts of mathematical sequences, specifically arithmetic and geometric sequences, in two contexts - music and economics.

Detailed Project Description

The class will be divided into groups of three to five members. Each group will be responsible for developing two ways to apply sequences in music and economics.

Music:

The groups will create a sequence of musical notes, building a song that repeats after a certain period - a song with a specific pattern that repeats. To do this, it is necessary to know the sequence of musical notes (Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Si) and the sequence of tones (Whole tone, Semitone).

Economics:

The groups will make an economic plan, saving an initial amount and adding a constant value each month (arithmetic sequence) or increasing the same percentage each month (geometric sequence). To do this, it is necessary to understand the concept of arithmetic sequence and geometric sequence, as well as simple and compound interests.

Required Materials

  1. Paper and pen for notes
  2. A calculator (can be on the phone)
  3. Computer with internet access for research
  4. Text editing software (Microsoft Word, Google Docs)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Study the concepts of arithmetic and geometric sequences through the material indicated in the contextualization.
  2. Divide the group into two teams - one will take care of the musical part and the other will take care of the economic part.
  3. Musical Team: Propose a sequence of notes and discuss how they form a melody. Describe the pattern that these notes follow.
  4. Economic Team: With an initial value and a savings plan, create a graph showing how the accumulated value grows over time, both for the case of constant increment and percentage increment.
  5. Bring the two teams together and share each one's observations.
  6. Write a report on the experience, detailing the steps, results, and conclusions.

Project Deliverables

The groups must deliver a final report in text format, containing:

  1. Introduction: Contextualize the theme of sequences, describe the relevance of sequences in real life, and explain the project's objective.
  2. Development: Describe in detail the activity procedure, justify the methodology used, and present the results obtained. Try to connect the theory of sequences with the project results.
  3. Conclusion: Reinforce the learnings obtained from the project and share the conclusions drawn about the project.
  4. Bibliography: List the sources consulted during the work, such as books, websites, videos, etc.

In addition, each group must deliver the graphs of the savings plan and the sequence of notes created for the musical part.
