Financial Mathematics: Simple Interest

Contextualization

Mathematics is one of the oldest and most fascinating sciences, full of theorems, postulates, formulas, and concepts that can often seem abstract and distant from our reality. However, there is a concept, especially in Financial Mathematics, that is not only easy to understand but also extremely useful in our daily lives: Simple Interest.

Simple Interest is the type that only applies to the principal amount, that is, the initial value of an investment or loan. For example, if you lend $100.00 at a simple interest rate of 10% per month, at the end of 1 month, you will receive $110.00 back. This extra amount is the interest.

Despite its simple concept, simple interest is a powerful tool in financial mathematics with various practical applications. It is used to calculate the return on short-term investments, determine the interest rate of a loan, and is also essential to understand other more complex concepts such as compound interest.

Importance of Simple Interest

Money management is an essential skill for life. Whether it's managing our personal finances, making investment decisions, or even understanding economic news, understanding the concept of simple interest is fundamental.

Simple interest is everywhere in our daily lives. When you open a savings account at the bank, when you take out a loan, when you invest money, when you pay a late bill, you are dealing with interest. Understanding how interest works can help you make more conscious and advantageous financial decisions.

Practical Activity: "The Path of Simple Interest"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to understand, through a practical and collaborative activity, the concept, applications, and implications of simple interest in everyday situations.

Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, will create a "financing desk." Each group will hypothetically have a sum of money to lend, and each group member will be responsible for an area of the desk: customer service, interest and term calculations, financial control, and risk analysis.

The groups will establish their own simple interest policies and payment terms, according to the pre-established conditions set by the teacher. Through simulations of everyday situations, the groups will make decisions about loans and investments, applying the concept of simple interest.

The simulations will be carried out in an Excel spreadsheet provided by the teacher, where students can track the results of the operations, calculate interest, term, and amount, and understand how simple interest affects the value of money.

Necessary Materials

  • Computers with internet access and Microsoft Excel
  • Note-taking material
  • Articles, books, and videos about simple interest

Step by Step:

  1. Division of students into groups and assignment of roles;
  2. Study of the concept of simple interest and its formulas based on the recommended resources;
  3. Development of the group's loan and investment policy using simple interest;
  4. Conducting simulations of loan and investment situations with simple interest in the Excel spreadsheet, based on the policy defined by the group;
  5. Analysis of the simulation results, verifying the impact of the decisions made by the group;
  6. Preparation of a final report, including all requested aspects (introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography).

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must submit a written report containing:

  • Introduction: Brief contextualization of the simple interest theme, the relevance of the theme for daily life, and the objective of the developed project.

  • Development: Description of the loan and investment policy established by the group with the application of simple interest. Detailed explanation of the simulations carried out, including the methodology used for calculating interest, terms, and amounts. Presentation and discussion of the results obtained.

  • Conclusion: Reflection on the learnings obtained during the project, highlighting the practical application of simple interest in daily life and the decisions made by the group.

  • Bibliography: References of the materials used for study and project development, including books, websites, videos, etc.

The report must be submitted on the date stipulated by the teacher, considering that the expected project development time is 5 to 10 hours per student.
