Doping in Sports

Contextualization

Sports are often seen as an expression of talent, ability, and sublime determination. However, intense competitive pressure can lead some athletes down an uncertain and harmful path - the use of doping substances. Doping is the use of prohibited performance-enhancing substances that are considered unacceptable and unfair in the sporting world.

It is essential to understand what doping is and why it is harmful and disapproved of. To this end, it is important to first understand how these substances work and what their consequences are. Some common examples of doping substances include anabolic steroids, stimulants, and hormones.

Furthermore, the ethical and moral issues surrounding doping are complex and go beyond mere performance gains. Doping harms athletes' health, corrupts the spirit of sportsmanship, and diminishes trust in sports as a whole.

Although doping is generally associated with elite sports, it can also be found at recreational levels. Thus, it is relevant to all members of society, especially young people who are beginning to participate in sports activities.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was created to promote, coordinate, and monitor the fight against doping in sports in all its forms. In its code, WADA lists the prohibited substances and describes the penalties for violators.

Here are some reference sources for further exploration of the topic:

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Investigation into Doping in Sports"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is for students to research, discuss, and analyze the problem of doping in sports, its consequences for athletes and for the integrity of sports, and to learn about the main doping substances and anti-doping measures.

Detailed Project Description

This project requires students to form groups of 3 to 5 members. The idea is for them to conduct a comprehensive investigation into doping in sports. The investigation should include a study of the concept of doping, its implications for athlete health, the impact on fair competition, and the actions taken to combat doping.

Required Materials

  • Internet access for research
  • Paper and pen for note-taking
  • Presentation software (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.) for the final presentation
  • Word processing software (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, etc.) for writing the final report

Detailed Step-by-Step Instructions for Completing the Activity

  1. Research (2-3 hours): Students should research the topic "Doping in Sports". This should include, but not be limited to, the definition of doping, common doping substances, effects on athlete performance and health, and actions taken to combat doping.

  2. Group Discussion (1-2 hours): Students should discuss their findings and views on the topic. They should try to understand the reasons that lead athletes to use doping and what the possible solutions to the problem might be.

  3. Presentation Preparation (1-2 hours): Based on their findings and discussions, students should prepare a presentation. The presentation should include all the topics discussed above.

  4. Presentation (~1 hour): Groups should present their findings to the class. The other students and the teacher may ask questions to further the discussion.

  5. Written Report (1-2 hours): After the presentations, each group should write a detailed report of their findings, including the topics of attention mentioned above.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, students should submit the prepared presentation and the written report.

The presentation should be clear and engaging, highlighting the group's main learning points on the topic.

The written report should follow the following format:

  1. Introduction: In this section, students should describe the topic of the project, its relevance, and current context. They should also state the objective of the project and the methodology used.

  2. Development: Students should describe in detail the concept of doping, the most common substances, the effects on athletes and sports, and the measures taken against doping. Here they should also discuss the practical activity carried out, the challenges encountered, and how they were resolved.

  3. Conclusions: Students should reiterate the main points of the research, highlighting the most striking lessons. It is also important for them to reflect on what they have learned and the importance of the topic in their lives and in society.

  4. Bibliography: Finally, students should list all sources of information used during the research.
