Contextualization
Sports is a cultural manifestation that has always been present in the history of humanity and, although often associated with leisure and recreation, plays a fundamental role in society. Sports have the power to unite people from different cultures, backgrounds, and beliefs, and are a means through which individuals can express their identities.
Historically, sports have been used as a way to resolve conflicts, establish alliances, and promote peace among peoples. In addition, sporting events, such as the Olympic Games and the World Cup, are occasions where the international community gathers to celebrate the spirit of competition and camaraderie.
Therefore, the study of the history of sports is extremely relevant, as it allows us to understand the social, political, and cultural trends that shape our lives. Furthermore, analyzing the evolution of sports over time can serve as a mirror to observe changes in society and human behavior.
Introduction
In this project, we will explore the history of sports from an interdisciplinary perspective, combining the disciplines of Physical Education and History. Through this approach, we will be able to understand the evolution of sports over time and the impact they have had on culture and society.
We will pay particular attention to the origin of modern sports, including how and why they developed. Additionally, we will analyze how sports have shaped and reflected society in different eras, exploring themes such as gender equality, globalization, and politics.
To complement the theoretical analysis, we will also investigate the practice of sports themselves, through practical activities and the bodily experience of different sports modalities. In this way, we will be able to understand not only the social and historical dimension of sports, but also their technical and physical aspects.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: "Unveiling the History of Sports"
Project Objective:
- Encourage research and learn about the history and evolution of a chosen sport by the group.
- Experience the practice of the chosen sport, highlighting its technical and cultural aspects.
- Produce a documentary and a report documenting the experience.
Detailed Project Description:
Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5, will choose a sport to study its origin, evolution, and impact on society. Each group must produce a documentary and a written report on the history of their selected sport.
The study should address the following topics:
- Sport Origin: How, where, and when the sport originated.
- Sport Evolution: How the sport developed over time.
- Social Impact: How the sport influenced culture and society.
- Sport Practice: Practical experience of the sport, learning its techniques and rules, and its importance for self-care and health.
- Sport Representation in the Media: How the sport is portrayed in the media and how this has changed over time.
The project will be executed in three phases:
- Research: Students will take two weeks to conduct in-depth research on the listed topics. Students are encouraged to use books, articles, documentaries, and interviews as research sources.
- Documentary Production: The group will then work on producing a short documentary (15-20 minutes) on video, including footage of themselves practicing the chosen sport. The documentary should be a creative and informative presentation of the history and practice of the sport.
- Written Report: In parallel with the documentary production, the group will work on writing a report detailing the research conducted, the conclusions, and the lessons learned.
Required Materials:
- Internet access for research.
- Filming equipment (smartphone cameras will suffice).
- Specific materials for the chosen sport, if necessary for practice.
Step-by-Step for Activity Completion:
- Groups are formed and each chooses a sport to study.
- Groups conduct in-depth research on the chosen sport, using various sources and focusing on the listed topics.
- Groups practice the chosen sport and record their experiences for the documentary.
- Groups produce the documentary, combining their practice footage with relevant images/clips and informative comments based on their research.
- In parallel with the documentary production, the group compiles their research and experiences into a written report.
Project Delivery:
Groups will deliver the following items at the end of the project:
- Documentary: A 15-20 minute video narrating the history of the sport, the group's practice, and the sport's influence on the media and society.
- Written Report: A document with the following sections:
- Introduction: Contextualization of the chosen sport, its relevance and real-world application, and the project's objective.
- Development: Theory behind the chosen sport, activities practiced, methodology used, and presentation and discussion of research results.
- Conclusion: Reaffirmation of key points, learnings, and conclusions about the project.
- Bibliography: Sources used for research.
The documentary and the report will serve as a reflection on the history of sports, their practice, and their role in society. The report allows students to articulate their theoretical findings, while the documentary will provide them with a platform to express their creativity and practical learnings.
Please note that the total project workload should exceed 12 hours per participating student.
