Contextualization

Theoretical Introduction

Galaxies are massive self-gravitating systems that contain millions to billions of stars, as well as gas clouds, planets, cosmic dust, and dark energy. Their formation and evolution are among the most important topics in contemporary astrophysics. Identifying and understanding their characteristics is a crucial step in comprehending the history of the universe.

There are mainly three types of galaxies: elliptical, spiral, and irregular. Spiral galaxies are characterized by having a flattened disk with spiral arms emanating from a central bulge. Elliptical galaxies, on the other hand, have a more spheroidal shape and do not have a disk or spiral arms. Irregular galaxies do not fit into either the elliptical or spiral category, having a more disordered and undefined shape.

Another important point is to differentiate galaxies from other cosmic phenomena, such as stars, black holes, and nebulae. While a galaxy is a large-scale system, stars are celestial bodies that make up galaxies. Black holes, in turn, are regions of spacetime where gravity is so strong that nothing -- not even light -- can escape. Nebulae are gas and dust clouds in space, often seen as regions of star formation.

Contextualization

Studying galaxies is not just a matter of contemplating the beauty of the universe. Galaxies contain the cosmic history of the universe. They are the main sites of star formation and harbor a variety of extreme astrophysical phenomena, including supermassive black holes and supernova explosions.

Furthermore, the study of galaxies plays an important role in verifying physical theories. For example, the observation of galaxies provides evidence for Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, and the peculiar motion of stars at the peripheries of galaxies provided the first clues to the existence of dark matter.

Activity

Activity Title: Building a Galaxy

Project Objective

This project aims to deepen students' knowledge about galaxies, their components, and different types, through the creation of a three-dimensional representation of a galaxy. Additionally, the project aims to develop skills such as teamwork, critical analysis, research, and report writing.

Detailed Project Description

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will research the different types of galaxies and choose one of them to create a three-dimensional model. The goal is to represent the main characteristics of the chosen galaxy type, such as shape, components, and the arrangement of these components.

The group, through a joint discussion, must define how the galaxy will be built, the materials to be used, and who will do what. After defining these issues, students should start the model construction process.

As part of the process, they should research and understand the difference between galaxies, stars, black holes, and nebulae, and how these components interrelate within the galaxy.

Required Materials

  • Craft materials (cardboard, styrofoam, clay, string, glue, paint, etc).
  • Documentation materials (laptops/notes for research and report writing).

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity

  1. Research the different types of galaxies and choose one type to represent.
  2. Brainstorm to define how you will build the three-dimensional model of the galaxy. Identify the main elements that should be included and how they will be represented.
  3. Define the tasks of each group member and start the construction process.
  4. During construction, continue researching to deepen your knowledge about galaxies and their components.
  5. After finishing the model, conduct a group review to ensure that all important parts have been included and are represented correctly.
  6. Take photos of the model to include in your report.
  7. Write the report, including the introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography used.
  8. Review the report as a group and make necessary corrections before submitting the final work.

Project Deliverables

  • Three-dimensional model of a galaxy with a brief oral explanation of its components and characteristics.

  • Written report containing:

    • Introduction: An explanation of what galaxies are, which type of galaxy the group chose to represent, and why studying this topic is important.

    • Development: A detailed description of the model construction process, including the methodology used and the results obtained. Photos of the model should be included, along with a discussion of the main components of the represented galaxy, differentiating it from black holes, nebulae, and stars.

    • Conclusion: A reflection on the project experience, highlighting the main learnings and how they contributed to a deeper understanding of the topic.

    • Bibliography: References to the materials and sources used for research and project construction.

Each group member should contribute to the report writing, ensuring that the document reflects the work and learning of all.
