For example, a planet that takes one year to orbit the Sun has a period of one year. Activity Title: Playing with Planets
Project Goal:
The goal of this project is to provide students with a hands-on and in-depth understanding of the Physics behind circular motion and the concept of period.
Detailed Project Description:
In this project, groups of 3 to 5 students will create a representation of a scaled-down solar system and will record and measure the circular motion of the "planets" around the "sun". Students will use common materials to assemble the solar system and a stopwatch to measure the periods of the "planets". They should record their data and the methodology used, and discuss the results in a final report.
Materials required:
- Spheres of different sizes (can be marbles, ping-pong balls, or Styrofoam balls)
- String
- Barbecue skewer or thin fishing rod
- Stopwatch
- Ruler or measuring tape
Detailed Step-by-Step:

Assembling the solar system: Use the barbecue skewer or fishing rod as the "sun". Tie different spheres to the string and hang them at different heights on the barbecue skewer to represent the "planets". Make sure the "planets" are well balanced and can spin freely.

Measuring the period: Make each "planet" rotate around the "sun". Use the stopwatch to measure the time it takes for each "planet" to complete one full revolution (this is the period).
