Contextualization
Graphic accentuation is one of the most important aspects of written Portuguese language. In the process of teaching and learning, mastering it is essential for the development of good readers and writers. It is a tool used to mark the tonic syllable of a word and plays an essential role in regulating correct pronunciation, understanding the meanings of words and phrases, and consequently, in building coherent and cohesive texts.
Often, poorly placed graphic accentuation can lead to misunderstandings in the interpretation of a text. Imagine, for example, an invitation to a party that says: 'WE CAN'T WAIT TO CELEBRATE'. But, in fact, the author meant to say: 'NO, WE CAN'T WAIT TO CELEBRATE', indicating that the party was postponed. The absence of the comma completely changed the message.
Thus, accentuation is essential not only to avoid writing errors, but also to ensure clarity and effectiveness of communication. It helps us to correctly convey our intentions, feelings, and thoughts. Therefore, it is essential to learn and master the rules of graphic accentuation in the Portuguese language.
Introduction
The Portuguese language has defined rules for graphic accentuation. They guide us on how and when to use the different accents: acute ( ́), grave ( ), circumflex (^), tilde (~), and trema (¨). Although the latter has been abolished from Brazilian Portuguese with the latest orthographic agreement, it can still be found in old texts and will therefore also be addressed in this project.
Accents serve to mark the tonic vowel of a word (the one pronounced with more emphasis), indicate the separation of vowels in a sequence (hiatus) or the meeting of two vowels that form a single sound (diphthong), and determine the correct pronunciation of a word. There are also special cases, such as the use of the tilde to indicate the nasalization of some vowels.
The rules of graphic accentuation may seem complicated at first glance, as there are many details to be observed. However, with practice and attention, it is possible to become familiar with them and incorporate them into our writing repertoire.
Practical Activity
Activity Title: Accentuating the Path
Project Objective:
The objective of this activity is, through a playful approach, to practice and consolidate the rules of graphic accentuation in Portuguese. Students will create a board game centered on questions about word accentuation.
Detailed Project Description:
Groups of 3 to 5 students will be challenged to develop a board game with the theme 'Rules of Graphic Accentuation'. The game must include a board and cards. The cards should present words without accents, and players must apply the rules of graphic accentuation to advance in the game. The board should be creative and engaging, representing different concepts of graphic accentuation.
Required Materials:
- Cardboard for the board
- Colored cardstock for the cards
- Markers, colored pencils
- Dictionaries or internet access for reference
- Scissors, glue
Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:
-
Groups should start by researching the rules of graphic accentuation, including acute, grave, circumflex, tilde, and trema accents.
-
Next, students should create the game cards. Each card should present a word without an accent. The words should be chosen to represent different accentuation rules. The correct answers (the words with correct accents) should be written on the back of the cards.
-
The board should be divided into different sections representing the rules of graphic accentuation. For example, there could be a path passing through different 'terrains' representing the rules for acute accent, circumflex accent, grave accent, tilde, and trema.
-
Once the game is ready, groups should play it to test if the rules are clear and if the game is challenging and fun. They can make adjustments as needed.
-
After completing the game, each group should write a manual explaining the game rules, how to play, and the objectives.
-
Finally, each group must present their game to the class, explaining their creation process, the game rules, and how it helps to learn and practice the rules of graphic accentuation.
Project Deliverables:
Students must deliver the complete board game along with the cards and the game manual.
Additionally, a report must be written containing:
-
Introduction: An explanation of the relevance of graphic accentuation rules in Portuguese and the purpose of the project.
-
Development: A detailed discussion on the different rules of graphic accentuation, with examples. The description of the project, including the game creation process, decisions made, and challenges encountered. Students should explain the game rules, how to play, and how the game helps to learn and practice the rules of graphic accentuation. They should also discuss the effectiveness of the game in terms of learning and fun.
-
Conclusion: A reflection on the experience, what they learned about graphic accentuation rules, and about teamwork.
-
Bibliography: The sources used for research, including books, web pages, and videos.
Students should strive to correctly apply the rules of graphic accentuation in writing the report, as this is an essential part of the project's learning and evaluation.
