Reading: Attribution of Meanings

Contextualization

Welcome to our magical project "Reading is assigning meanings". Reading is one of the most valuable skills we can have as human beings. However, reading is often seen only as the act of decoding words and phrases. Nevertheless, reading is, more deeply, a process of assigning meanings. When we read, we are not just absorbing the information presented to us, but interpreting it, contextualizing it, and giving it our own meaning.

In fact, reading is a form of interaction between the reader and the text. Each reader, based on their personal and cultural experiences, assigns a unique meaning to the text. This means that reading is deeply personal and subjective. That is why two people can read the same text and draw completely different interpretations.

So, why is it important to understand that "reading is assigning meanings"? First, understanding this helps us to be more active and critical readers. Instead of just accepting the words as they are presented, we can question, ponder, and formulate our own conclusions about the text. Furthermore, this helps us appreciate the diversity of perspectives and opinions that can arise from a single text. This is particularly important in our increasingly diverse societies, where understanding other people's perspectives can be a crucial step in promoting dialogue and mutual understanding.

In this digitized information world, where we are bombarded with news, advertising, and social media, being able to assign meanings to texts is essential. Moreover, in an increasingly globalized context, it is necessary to have the skills of interpretation, analysis, and solving complex problems related to how reading is done and understood.

To better understand this concept, I suggest the following readings and resources:

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Creating Our Own Meanings"

Project Objective:

  1. Understand that reading is an act of assigning meanings, based on our experiences, knowledge, and personal perspectives.
  2. Develop critical and interpretative reading skills, allowing students to extract deep meanings from texts and speeches.
  3. Improve teamwork, communication, and time management throughout the project.

Detailed Project Description:

Each group of 3 to 5 students must choose a book, story, or article to be the basis of their project. The chosen material should be complex enough to allow for a deep analysis but accessible to all group members.

Students will analyze the chosen text and assign their own meanings, interpreting the work in light of their own context and experiences. The goal is for each group to produce a "reading guide" that explains and analyzes the reading material in light of their own interests and perspectives.

Necessary Materials:

  1. Book, story, or article chosen for analysis.
  2. Notebook for notes on the text and for planning the reading guide.
  3. Computer with internet access for research and production of the final report.

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Group Formation and Choice of Reading Material: Form a group of 3 to 5 students and jointly choose a book, story, or article to analyze. Remember, all group members must have access to the reading material.

  2. Reading and Notes: Each group member should read the material and make individual notes on their interpretations and the meanings they assign to the text.

  3. Group Discussion: Hold meetings to discuss your interpretations and understand the different perspectives within the group.

  4. Writing the Reading Guide: The group should start writing the reading guide, combining all their interpretations and explaining how they arrived at them.

  5. Review and Adjustments: Review the reading guide, ensuring that all group members are comfortable with the final product.

  6. Production of the Final Report: Finally, using the reading guide as a basis, the group should produce a detailed report discussing their interpretations, the process of building the guide, and the lessons learned along the way. This report should have four main parts: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Project Delivery:

The final result of this project will be the delivery of a written report and a reading guide. The report should contain:

  1. Introduction: Provide context for the work, discuss its relevance and importance in the real world, explain the project's objectives, and briefly introduce the chosen reading material.

  2. Development: Discuss the theory of assigning meanings in reading, explain in detail the activity carried out by the group, the methodology used, and how the reading guide was developed. Present the different interpretations and discussions that arose within the group during the reading and guide preparation.

  3. Conclusion: Summarize the main points addressed in the report, relate the learnings obtained to the theory studied, and draw conclusions about the project. Discuss how this experience impacted your understanding of reading, interpreting the results and how they reflect the idea that "reading is assigning meanings".

  4. Bibliography: List all sources consulted during the project such as books, articles, videos, websites, among others.

The reading guide should be a detailed exploration of the chosen reading material, containing analyses, interpretations, and discussions that represent the meaning assignment made by the group.
