Reading is a fundamental ability of human beings. Developing this skill is essential for effective functioning in today's society. With the advent of information technology, we are increasingly surrounded by information written in various formats: books, articles, blogs, social media posts, etc. Reading offers numerous advantages such as vocabulary enhancement, improvement in writing, knowledge, among others.
To make the most of these advantages, we need to understand the objectives of reading. These are widely disseminated in four main categories: literal, inferential, critical, and appreciative reading. With each type of reading, we aim for a different objective, which can range from mere assimilation of facts to a complex analysis and critical evaluation of the text.
Introduction
Literal reading is the first level of comprehension and involves the direct and explicit understanding of the information in the text. Inferential reading, on the other hand, goes beyond what is written in the text and requires the reader to make connections between what they already know and the new information provided in the text.
Critical reading is a more sophisticated skill that involves evaluation and judgment. This type of reading allows readers to form opinions about the information in the text and evaluate it to determine beauty, truth, validity, among others. Finally, we have appreciative reading, which is the ability to appreciate the text for its aesthetic, literary, emotional qualities, or others.
Although each type of reading is unique and has its own set of skills, strategies, and processes, they are all interconnected and overlap in various ways. Therefore, to be an effective reader, it is important to master all four types of reading objectives.
Practical Activity - 'From Literality to Criticality: Navigating through the Objectives of Reading'
Project Objectives
The objective of this project is to provide students with the opportunity to explore and deeply understand the four types of reading objectives: literal, inferential, critical, and appreciative. Students will, in groups, address all these aspects of reading through a playful and creative journey.
Detailed Project Description
The project will be based on reading a book chosen by the group, preferably a literary work of recognized merit, in order to involve the Literature discipline in the project, in addition to Portuguese.
The tasks will be divided into four main stages that will represent each reading objective. Students will create a 'Reading Map' of their journey, where they will record their discoveries, reflections, and creativities at each stage.
Necessary Materials
- A book chosen by the group;
- Large paper to create the 'Reading Map';
- Writing and painting materials such as pens, colored pencils, markers, etc.;
- Internet access for complementary research;
- Various materials for making additional materials such as posters, boards, etc.
Detailed Step-by-Step
Stage 1 - Literal Reading: In groups, students must read the chosen book and discuss the explicit information in the text. They should then record this information on the 'Reading Map'.
Stage 2 - Inferential Reading: Students must revisit the book, this time seeking to understand the implicit information, the subtext. They should discuss and record their inferences on the 'Reading Map'.
Stage 3 - Critical Reading: Now, students must evaluate and form opinions about the information in the text. They should discuss the strengths and weaknesses, the characters, the plot, the author's ideas, among others. They should also contrast opinions and reach group conclusions that will be recorded on the 'Reading Map'.
Stage 4 - Appreciative Reading: Finally, students must appreciate the work for its literary, ethical, and aesthetic qualities, recording their appreciations in the form of reviews, poems, drawings, etc., on the 'Reading Map'.
Final Report: After completing the 'Reading Map', each group must prepare a detailed report of the journey, which will include the Introduction (project contextualization, relevance, and objectives), Development (methodology used, activities carried out, results obtained), Conclusions (main learnings, challenges faced, suggestions for improvements), and Bibliography (sources consulted).
Project Deliverables
At the end of the project, each group must deliver the 'Reading Map,' which will be a physical record of their reading journey, exploring the four reading objectives. In addition, they must deliver a written report that documents in detail the project's trajectory.
This report will not only recap the discoveries and reflections contained in the 'Reading Map,' but will also discuss the processes, challenges, and learnings that occurred throughout the project. Thus, the written document and the 'Reading Map' will be intrinsically connected, with the written document explaining and contextualizing the content of the map.
The activity should be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and should last approximately 12 hours for each participating student, including reading time, group discussion, creation of the 'Reading Map,' and report writing.
Through this activity, students will learn to identify and apply different reading objectives, collaborate effectively, and express their ideas clearly, logically, and creatively, especially through the report writing, which is a crucial step of the project.
