Use of Hyphen

Contextualization

Introduction

The Portuguese language, like any other language, has several rules and norms that regulate its correct usage. One of these rules is the use of the hyphen, a small dash that makes a big difference in the meaning and pronunciation of words.

The hyphen is mainly used in our language to connect elements that make up a compound word. However, its use is not as simple as it may seem at first glance. There are several rules that determine when and how the hyphen should be used.

The rules for hyphen usage were changed with the New Orthographic Agreement, implemented in Brazil in 2009. This change brought a lot of confusion and doubts to many Portuguese speakers, making mastering this norm even more essential.

The Importance of the Hyphen

The correct use of the hyphen is essential for clarity and precision in written communication. A word written with or without a hyphen can have completely different meanings. Furthermore, improper use of the hyphen can cause strangeness or difficulty in understanding for the reader.

In the real world, the correct use of the hyphen is crucial in various situations, such as writing reports, articles, professional emails, academic papers, and even social media posts. Mastering this norm is a differential for anyone who wishes to communicate efficiently and precisely.

Furthermore, the correct use of the hyphen is a requirement for many exams, contests, and selection processes, being a skill required in many assessments of Portuguese language knowledge. Therefore, knowing the rules for hyphen usage is fundamental for those who wish to succeed in their academic and professional lives.

Activity

Activity Title: "In Search of the Lost Hyphen"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to enhance students' mastery of hyphen usage in the Portuguese language, stimulate collaborative learning, and develop research, information analysis, and writing skills.

Detailed Project Description

In groups of 3 to 5 members, students must create a "Practical Guide to Hyphen Usage." For this task, participants will have to conduct in-depth research and analyze the rules for hyphen usage in the Portuguese language. The research findings, conclusions, and guide must be presented in a report format.

This project also extends to another subject, Art. In a section of the Practical Guide, students must create a comic strip (cartoons or comics) to exemplify the correct and incorrect use of the hyphen, making learning more playful and fun.

Required Materials

  • Computer with internet access for research.
  • Drawing materials: pencils, erasers, paper, colored pens, etc.
  • Text editing software for report creation.

Step by Step

  1. Group Formation: The teacher divides the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Research: Groups must conduct in-depth research on hyphen usage in the Portuguese language, using the recommended resources in the introduction and others they deem relevant.

  3. Analysis: Students must identify and discuss the rules for hyphen usage among themselves, as well as the exceptions.

  4. Guide Creation: Based on the research and discussions, groups must create a "Practical Guide to Hyphen Usage," which should include a detailed explanation of the rules, usage examples, exceptions, and any other relevant information.

  5. Comic Strip Creation: Using Art skills, students must create a comic strip that illustrates in a playful way the correct and incorrect use of the hyphen.

  6. Report Elaboration: Each group must prepare a report that includes the Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used. The report must be written clearly, objectively, and well-structured, detailing the methodology used, theory, activity in detail, and results obtained.

The estimated time for completing the entire project, from research to report writing, is approximately 12 hours per student.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, each group must deliver:

  1. The "Practical Guide to Hyphen Usage," which will be evaluated based on the clarity, accuracy, and relevance of the information contained.

  2. The comic strip illustrating the correct and incorrect use of the hyphen.

  3. The written report, which must be structured with the following topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used. The report must be carefully revised to avoid spelling and grammar errors.
