Theoretical Introduction

Inference is one of the pillars of reading comprehension and an essential element of language. When we talk about inferences in the Portuguese language, we are referring to the ability to give meaning to a sentence or text from clues and suggestions inserted in the text itself or taken from our prior knowledge.

In the first paragraph of a text, for example, an author may introduce a concept or a general idea. Then, the author may give more details or examples to support that idea. That is, the reader is encouraged to make an inference (or several inferences) to understand the text as a whole.

Indeed, linguistic theory shows us that effective communication depends on our ability to make inferences. To make inferences, we use our grammatical understanding of the language (syntax, semantics), our knowledge of the world around us, and the contextual cues present in the text.

Contextualization

Mastering the concept of inference is not only important for the classroom, but it extends to so many other areas of everyday life. Inference is what allows us to understand the news when we read a newspaper, follow the plot of a movie or novel, or even understand the hidden intentions and emotions behind a friend's words.

In the professional environment, the ability to make inferences can be the key to success in many careers. Lawyers, doctors, scientists, and even artists rely on inferences to analyze information, solve problems, and create new ideas.

Practical Activity - "It's Not What It Seems"

Project Objective

To develop the inference skill through the reading, analysis, and discussion of varied literary texts. The learning will take place through the preparation of a detailed report that highlights the inference processes carried out and the conclusions reached.

Project Description

In this project, students will meet in groups of 3 to 5 people to analyze a series of literary texts (short stories, chronicles, poems, etc.). Each group will have the mission of identifying the clues and suggestions in the texts that allow inferring information not explicitly stated by the author.

Required Materials

• Collections of various literary texts (short stories, chronicles, poems, etc.)
• Books and articles on linguistic inference
• Paper and pen for notes
• Computer with internet access for additional research

Step-by-Step

1. Group formation and text selection: The groups will be formed taking into account the diversity of profiles, skills, and interests of the students. Each group will choose five varied literary texts to analyze.

2. Individual and collective study of the texts: Each member of the group will read the chosen texts individually, making their own notes on the possible inferences. After the individual reading, the group will meet to discuss the different interpretations and reach a consensus on the most likely inferences.

3. Preparation of the report: The group will prepare a detailed report on the inference process in each text. The report should contain an introduction to the theme of inference, a theoretical discussion based on the studied bibliography, a detailed description of the inference process in each text, and the group's conclusion on the inferences made.

4. Presentation of the report: Each group will present their report to the class. The presentation can be done orally or through a multimedia presentation.

Project Deliverables

At the end of this project, each group must submit:

1. Written report: The report should follow the suggested format (Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography) and should detail the inference process carried out by the group. The conclusions should highlight the lessons learned and indicate the importance of inference in reading and understanding texts. The bibliography should cite all sources used during the project.

2. Presentation: The presentation can be done orally or through a multimedia presentation. It should summarize the written report and present the group's main findings.

The execution of the project should be carried out meeting the established deadlines and respecting the diversity and individuality of each member of the group. Students will be evaluated on their ability to infer information from the texts, but also on their communication skills, collaboration, time management, and problem solving.
