Literary Genres: Systematization

Contextualization

Literature has always been a way to express thoughts, emotions, criticisms of society, and also to teach and learn. Since time immemorial, humans have used literature to transmit knowledge, teachings, and stories from generation to generation. But within this vast literary universe, there are different forms or genres that express themselves: The epic, the lyric, and the dramatic. Each of these genres has its own characteristics and reflects a worldview, a type of feeling, or a way of telling stories.

Literary genres are a way of categorizing literary works according to structural and content characteristics. Through genres, we can better understand literature and its various expressions. Furthermore, they help us reflect on the various historical, social, and cultural contexts that influence literary production.

But have you ever stopped to think about how these literary genres originated and how they have been systematized over time? In fact, the classification of literary genres is a theoretical construction that has been refined and debated for centuries by literature scholars.

Literary genres are directly linked to the society and culture in which they were created. The study of literary genres allows us to better understand the diversity of cultural expressions that exist in the world, as well as the evolution of society and human thought over time.

Furthermore, knowledge of literary genres is an important tool for the formation of a critical reader, capable of analyzing and interpreting literary texts in a deep and reflective manner.

Therefore, in this project, I invite you to embark on a journey of discovery and analysis of literary genres and their systematization, through a practical activity that will stimulate your critical thinking and creativity.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "The Journey of Literary Genres"

Activity Objective

The main objective of this project is for students to understand the evolution and categorization of literary genres throughout the history of literature. Additionally, it aims to stimulate collaboration, creativity, and the exercise of skills in analyzing and interpreting texts.

Project Description

Students, organized in groups of 3 to 5, will research, analyze, and present a project on a specific literary genre chosen by the group. The project will be divided into two main phases: the research and analysis phase, and the presentation phase.

  1. Research and Analysis Phase: In this phase, groups will conduct in-depth research on the chosen literary genre, considering the following points:

    • Origin and evolution of the genre;
    • Typical characteristics of the genre, such as structure, themes, language, etc.;
    • Representative examples of works of the genre and their analyses;
    • Cultural, historical, and social influences that affected the development of the genre.
  2. Presentation Phase: In this second phase, groups will prepare a creative presentation on the researched literary genre. This presentation can take the form of a theatrical piece, video, podcast, comic book, slide presentation, among others. The important thing is that the presentation is informative, engaging, and reflects the knowledge acquired during the research phase.

Required Materials

  • Books and/or online resources on literary genres;
  • Materials needed for the presentation creation (vary according to the chosen format).

Step by Step

1. Group Formation and Literary Genre Selection

Students should organize themselves into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will choose a literary genre to work on. It is interesting that each group chooses a different genre, so that there can be a knowledge exchange at the end of the project.

2. Research and Analysis

With the chosen genre, groups should start the research. This research should be guided by the questions suggested in the project description, and each group should organize to divide the tasks among its members.

3. Presentation Preparation

With the knowledge acquired in the research phase, groups should prepare a presentation on the researched literary genre. The presentation format is free, however, it must be informative, creative, and engaging.

4. Presentation and Discussion

The presentations will be held on an agreed date. After each presentation, it is interesting to have a space for questions and discussions.

5. Written Report

After the presentations, each group should prepare a written report on the project, which should follow the following structure:

  • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, relevance, real-world application, and project objective.
  • Development: Discussion of the findings in the research on the chosen literary genre, detailing the activity carried out, explanation of the methodology used, and presentation of the results obtained.
  • Conclusion: Summary of the main points of the research and presentation, reflection on the learnings obtained, and final comments on the project.
  • Bibliography: Citation of all research sources used in the project.

This report will be the official record of the group's work and will be used to evaluate the students' performance in the project.

Project Duration: Up to 1 month
